Bookfair.

          One week to go until the Red and Black Clydeside Bookfair and Gathering, the culmination of their May Week Celebrations. it takes place on Saturday 27th May, at the CCA 350 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow. This is an event not to be missed. 21 stalls, discussions, talks, films, a chance to ramble through a variety of view all fighting for that better world for all. A chance to meet old friends, make new ones, chat, learn what is going on in our city, get involved.
         One of the stalls to look out for would Spirit of Revolt Archive, probably the largest collection in Scotland of anarchist and libertarian socialist history, comprising of, letters, post cards, banners, photos, serials, memorabilia and much more. Why not pay their website a visit before dropping in to have a chat with them at the Bookfair on Saturday.

           Continuing on from May 1st., Red and Black Clydeside's next event celebrating May is the bookfair and gathering, at the CCA 350. Sauchiehall Street Glasgow, May 27th, 12 noon to 8pm. A must not miss affair, with talks, films, stalls, discussions and merry chatting with new and old comrades. See you there.

May Day.

 

          Spirit of Revolt's May Day picnic on the Green, despite changing weather, can be counted as a success. Though not as many turned up as we would have liked, but the Workers Memorial display attracted lots of passers-by, and by the amount of literature that we managed to hand out, it certainly was a great success. We managed to distribute lots of Anarchist Critic, Glasgow Keelies, Red and Black Poetry night leaflets, Red and Black Bookfair and Gathering leaflets, Spirit of Revolt business cards, plus lots of Radical Glasgow History Project leaflets. Encouragingly they were all taken with some enthusiasm. A big thank you to all those who turned up.

            Glasgow's Red and Black Bookfair on Saturday May 7th. was a great success. A good variety of interesting and colourful stalls and was well attended with lots of young folk, which is also very encouraging. So a bit of a pat on the back for those who organised and took party. Let's hope it can become a welcome annual affair in the city. So if you attended, or missed it, and would like to see it a repeat annual get together, get in touch with any of the groups involved and make your voice heard. It's up to you.

         Perhaps I'm beginning to appear like the BBC, I keep putting on repeats. However, I think some things are worth repeating, so here I go again. The next two big events coming up in Glasgow are two "must not miss" events. The first is the Anti-war rally, Saturday May 7th. 11.30am, Blythswood Square Glasgow. Spread the word bring your friends and family it affects us all.

 

        This very important event finishes in nice time for you to wander down to the CCA 350 Sauchiehall Street and enjoy the  Red and Black Clydeside Bookfair 3pm to 9pm. With war and savage attacks on our living standards there has never been a more important time for us all to get together and organise how we will tackle these horrendous affairs.

              Another reminder, May 7th.  get your red marker and mark your diary, Red and Black Clydeside Bookfair at the CCA, 350, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. This is the first Red and Black Bookfair  in Glasgow for some considerable time. It is loaded with stalls, speakers, discussion groups, film, come and be part of it, participate, or just mingle and chat, with old friends, make new friends. With the onslaught of the standard of living crisis hitting us all, there never has been a more urgent time to come together and discuss these things and perhaps find solutions. Or just come along pick up some leaflets, enjoy the event and the company.

          Three weeks or so until the first anarchist bookfair in Glasgow for some time, The Red and Black Clydeside Bookfair, and it is shaping up to be a great event. Already committed are lots of stalls, speakers, discussion groups, books, literature and films. There is still time to book your stall, put forward your speaker, suggest a discussion topic. What ever you do, turn up, it will be an exiting and stimulating experience. Meet old friends, make new friends, pick up literature and info, add your tuppence worth at the discussion enjoy the film, whatever takes your fancy. There has never been a more urgent need for the radical left to come together and organise against the brutal onslaught of hardship this system is now inflicting on all the ordinary people of this country.

         Another reminder of the Red and Black Clydeside Bookfair coming up as part of Glasgow May Day celebrations. May Day is important to the ordinary people, as it it is a time to celebrate our struggles, our successes and honour our class warriors, but also a day to come together with old and new friends, to strengthen those bonds of solidarity among the ordinary people of our cities towns and villages. Why not get a stall, come and give a talk, join in the discussions, what ever, but do come along and just browse and mingle, meet new friends, and old acquaintances.
        With all the present brutal attacks on our living standards, there has never been a more important time for all the ordinary people to come together and defend our living standards against this unnecessary vicious avalanche of austerity and hardship that is being heaped on us, all in the name of the economy and profit.

        Glasgow has one of the richest histories of anarchist organising in these islands. Our founding mothers include Ethel MacDonald, Jenny Patrick, Margaret Duff, and Mollie Baird. Our history includes names such as Guy Aldred, John Taylor Caldwell and Stuart Christie, organisations such as the Anti-Parliamentary Communist Federation, and publishing houses such as the Strickland Press.
       Anarchist pamphlets, leaflets, newspapers, books, speakers, organisers, agitators, and groups have informed and excited radical and working class life in Glasgow since the 19th Century.
       That tradition continues today, and Red and Black Clydeside is just its latest expression.
       The event is a showcase for the libertarian left and beyond in Glasgow today. As well as talks, discussions, and stalls, we are providing a long overdue chance, curtailed by the pandemic, to mingle in person.
       Red and Black Clydeside is part of working class Glasgow’s May Day celebrations, and follows from the previous weekend’s May Day on the Green. It is organised by groups including Glasgow ACG, the Glasgow Keelie and other individuals.
       The event will take place in the CCA on Sauchiehall Street on 7th May 2022, but we hope its effects will be much longer lasting.

           Anarchist bookfairs are great events, bringing together all shades of the libertarian left for exchange of knowledge, swapping info, spreading our literature, making new friends and contacts and renewing old acquaintances, or just mingling and learning. However it has been a while since Glasgow held its own bookfair, that is about to change.
           Come May 7th. Glasgow will be home to the Red and Black Clydeside Bookfair. Here is our chance to showcase what the libertarian/anarchist folks have to say. We can and should make this a resounding success, today more than ever we need a strong and powerful resistance to the onslaught of hardship that is speeding towards the ordinary people of this country, and further afield.
To make it a success you need to get involved, so if you want to get a stall, hold a meeting, open a discussion or contribute in any way, please get in touch. It is our bookfair, let's get it off the ground with a roar, not a whisper.

Spirit of Revolt At The Bookfair.

      The Spirit of Revolt Archive is now established as a very valuable resource of grassroots working class history and struggles in the Glasgow/Clydeside area. We are always eager to reach out to the public at large to encourage them to get to know their own history. To this end we hold exhibitions, and talks/discussions, we also hold a regular talk/discussion and display of material in the Mitchell Library, called "Show and Tell", as well as other events to attempt to bring our history alive.

     We are delighted to be taking part in coming event Glasgow Autonomous Space Bookfair on Saturday, March 2nd. with a stall displaying a wiff of what we hold in the archive. Please come along and visit us at the stall, ask questions, Talk to us about your views on Glasgow's proud radical history.

Spirit of Revolt Archive, Glasgow based, run by volunteers, dedicated to collecting, preserving multi-media records from Glasgow/Clydeside’s anarchist, libertarian-socialist past and present. Formed August 2011 it has 38 collections and growing. It is now an important resource of working class history. A large amount of its material can be viewed online. Other material can be viewed in the Mitchell Archive reading room.
