Civilised People Don't Cage Animals Or Humans.

The UK has one of the highest prison populations percentage of population in Europe, being beaten by Poland. The UK prison population stands at approximately 86,000, this is an increase of roughly 800, on last year. The largest growing age group being imprisoned are the over 60s, showing an increase of 130% between 2002 and 2013. The UK state imprisons 148 of its citizens per 100,000 of the population. All this while we are being told that crime is falling. Prisons have nothing to do with rehabilitation, they are simply a method of control by the establishment.
Not content with holding the dubious record of imprisoning more of it citizens than practically every other country in Europe, the UK state is building a mega-prison in Wrexham, North Wales. This monstrosity of inhumanity, will have the capacity to cage 2,100 of our citizens. It will be the second largest prison in Europe and will cover an area large enough to fit the Millennium Stadium in its grounds seven times over and still leave space. It will cost an estimated £250 million of our tax money to build, which will go to the shareholders of Lend Lease, the company doing the build.
Why should we be concerned? Simply because we know, like all prisons, it will imprison, the poor, working class, troubled people with mental health difficulties, learning difficulties, individuals suffering substance abuse, plus a disproportion of people of colour and immigrants. We know that these festering, depressing halls of cages, produce self-harming, brutality, mental trauma and suicides. Also, apart from being an inhumane and brutal caging of human beings, its workshops will replace local jobs based on slave labour, and paying well below the minimum wage. As far as I am aware, the decision as to whether it should be run by the public or the private sector has still to be decided. Another wonderful corporate idea, making a fortune from the incarceration of poor and vulnerable people.
However, there has been considerable resistance to this monstrous edifice of the capitalist exploitative system.

This from Contra Info:
Sunday 17th May, 2015.
Last night an action took place at the site of Europe’s second largest prison in construction on Wrexham Industrial Estate in North Wales. The mega-prison, if built, will cage more than 2100 human beings at any one time.
Multiple large diggers and construction equipment had their engines destroyed. Slogans were sprayed on the half-built prison fences including ‘Fuck Lend Lease’ and ‘Fire to the Prisons’.
This is a warning to any company large or small that that is involved in the North Wales Prison Project, or any other prison building scheme that the state initiates. You are a target and you will feel the venom of the working classes fighting back.
This action is dedicated to every slit wrist, suicide attempt, destroyed family and oppressed community harmed by the prison system.

State Repression Is World Wide.

Operation Pandora targets anarchists in Spain, and Dorset police target anarchists in UK, there are similar actions by various states across the globe. In the US the case of anarchist Sean Swain has been going on since 1991, and now Sean is putting his life on the line. He needs support and a show of strength and solidarity.
Sean Swain is a hostage held by a lawless rogue-state calling itself “The State of Ohio.”1    He has been held without legal conviction or sentence since 1991 for the self-defense killing of a court official’s relative who broke into Sean’s home and threatened his life. In fall of 2012, prisoners calling themselves the Army of the 12 Monkeys (A12M) got rowdy at Mansfield Correctional, and the prison authorities assumed “that anarchist” Sean Swain must have been behind it and threw him in supermax isolation. Sean denies any involvement or affiliation with the A12M and is in the process of suing the ODRC for targetting him based exclusively on his ideology and political speech.
Sean is the only son of a retired auto worker and stay-home mom. He has renounced his high school diploma, his college degree, and his honorable discharge from the U.S. military. Before being taken hostage, Sean worked as a newspaper columnist and as a union organizer.
From 325:
Via ABC Hurricane:

With fascist fuckweasels ignoring his hungerstrike, anarchist prisoner Sean Swain has vowed to refuse his blood pressure medication, beginning February 9. This medication keeps his blood pressure regulated. To stop taking this medication “cold turkey” is extremely dangerous, as it could cause a spike in blood pressure which can lead to heart attack, stroke or aneurysm.

“Freedom or death,” Sean said. “I’m not fucking around.”
Fuckweasels have engaged in a concerted, provable pattern of harassing every element of Sean’s communication, waging a war against anarchist expression.
Within 48 hours of suspending his medication, Sean will be in serious danger of medical problems and anticipates he will soon be held incommunicado in a torture cell, in a fuckweasel effort to break his will and cut him off from the outside world. But, as he pointed out, that will not stop his blood pressure from spiking.

Prisons, A Tool Of Oppression.

Prisons, the state's answer to the cry for freedom. A necessary tool in the armoury of oppressors, the club held above your head, to demand you subservience.

An open letter from a Mexican prison, by Fernando Barcenos:
Fernando’s text December 15, 2014
To free spirits and rebels To the oppressed and marginalized To people in general Today I officially completed one year in prison; on December 10, 2014 I was sentenced to five years and nine months’ prison on charges of breach of the peace and conspiracy to commit a crime.
These accusations were argued with nothing but mere conjecture and without any real evidence to prove my guilt. As for the crime of conspiracy, the only thing that sustains the accusation is that I had with me protest material and anarchist statements, making it clear that this is an ideological criminalization aimed at defaming and discrediting anarchist and libertarian ideas. Historically, in all eras, a series of ideas, thoughts and information in general are suppressed, not allowed to be thought by the individuals of a given society.
However there are always people and individuals who refuse to tow the line and who, not conforming to that which one is permitted to do, be and think, decided to risk our lives in search of authentic freedom. And when we have dealt with social ills, product of hierarchy, they have called us authors of disorder and sent us to populate the prisons.
Without a doubt rebellion does not stop in jail, it is precisely in jail that the rebel is formed completely and any doubts or contradictions that might have existed in his ideas till then dissipate. He ends up strengthening himself and becoming ideologically more grounded. Entering prison ends one cycle of struggle to start a new one, but this time more radical, direct and complete. May the walls come down and freedom continue its inexorable course, until we are all free!

A Living Hell In Greece.

The conditions that the Troika, (EC, European Commission, ECB, European Central Bank, IMF, International Mankind Fuckers.) has forced on the people of Greece is criminal, it has resulted in a massive increase in health problems, both physical and mental, at the same time as it dismantles the health service. It has destroyed the education system, is responsible for a catastrophic increase in substance abuse and suicides. All in the name of "balancing the books", which translates into making good the financial Mafia's gambling losses. However there is a group, hidden away from the eyes of the public, that suffers appalling, inhumane treatment and conditions, that belong to some barbaric distant past. Here and now, in so called developed and democratic Europe, there are people living in conditions that break ever rule of a civilised society. The Greek prisons take us down through the circles of Dante's Inferno, to a living hell, that must be exposed and eradicated. By this glaring evidence, the Greek state and its masters the Troika, stand condemned of crimes against humanity.

Prisons Are Big Business.

It is a cruel and strange world where large corporations make money from locking people up in cages. The prison "service" is big business especially in the US, where large corporations invest billions on building and running prisons. Like all large corporations, the have to keep cutting costs and increasing profits to keep their greedy shareholders happy. This can only mean deteriorating conditions for those unfortunate to get caught up in the web of greed. What sort of conditions would make 30,000 prisoners go on hunger strike, it is difficult to imagine those sort of conditions, and what is more distressing is that they are administered by ordinary people doing the dirty work for the corporations.

30,000 prisoners start hunger strike in California

Around 30,000 prisoners in California have begun an indefinite hunger strike and work stoppage. They say:

“We are grateful for your support of our peaceful protest against the state-sanctioned torture that happens not only here at Pelican Bay but in prisons everywhere. We have taken up this hunger strike and work stoppage, which has included 30,000 prisoners in California so far, not only to improve our own conditions but also an act of solidarity with all prisoners and oppressed people around the world.”

Nearly 12,000 prisoners in California are being held in extreme isolation, in cells with no windows, and no access to fresh air or sunlight. In 2011 Juan Méndez, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, recommended a ban on subjecting prisoners to solitary confinement for more than 15 days. But people in state prisons in California have been held in solitary confinement for 10-40 years.

CAGES OF REPRESSION.

I think we can all agree the state prisons are not displays of justice and democracy. They tend to be state run, or or now more than ever, corporate run cages of suppression. In that league, I think American prisons must rate among the most repressive and certainly the most lucrative for the corporate world. Even in that country now and again we hear of a case that contradicts all moral, ethical and common decency codes and degrades humanity. To deny a cancer sufferer treatment because they are in prison seems to be sinking below the borrom of the barrel.

Dear Friend,

Civil rights attorney and political prisoner Lynne Stewart needs help. She fought breast cancer two years ago, apparently successfully, but now the cancer is spreading. Her condition is treatable. But authorities have denied her request for transfer from her Texas prison to the New York City hospital where she received expert medical attention before.
Please flood the mail with cards and letters to Lynne. This will boost her spirits, and it will also serve another purpose. The authorities track and read all her mail, and they take notice when they see that the world is watching.
Stewart, a longtime anti-war and social-justice activist and respected criminal defense attorney, was unjustly convicted in 2005 of providing “support for terrorism” by delivering a handwritten press release to Reuters from Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, a client that the court had appointed her to represent. An articulate critic of the U.S. justice system, Stewart is known as the “People’s Lawyer” for representing controversial clients, political dissidents, and the poor.

Send messages and cards to:
Lynne Stewart 53504-054
Federal Medical Center Carswell
P.O. Box 27137
Fort Worth, TX 76127

You can get more information about Stewart’s case by listening to an interview with her husband, Ralph Poynter  (128 kbps version hi fi  or  32 kbps version lo fi), visiting the Justice for Lynne Stewart Web page http://lynnestewart.org, or reading about her at www.socialism.com.

On the legal front, Lynne’s team from the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyers Guild are fighting the original charges and asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review her case.

Please take a moment to send Lynne a card. Our actions can pressure the prison system to authorize the healthcare she needs and keep her alive while we continue to fight for her freedom.

CORPORATE FASCISM IS HERE.

When you look at how this country and most other Western "democracies" have developed along a continuous shift to the right, with us now at the point where it is safe to say we live in a system of corporate fascism, it becomes obvious that it doesn't it matter which party gains power. From Social Democrats to Conservative, from Liberal to Christian Democrats, form Labour to Socialist, they all end up carrying out the same policies, they all end up following the dictate of that hit squad of the corporate fascists, the financial Mafia. Even the smoke and mirrors of the illusion of democracy has disappeared, your elected government will do the bidding of "the market". Its policies will be shaped by "the market" as if "the market" was some supernatural being beyond the reach of man. Let's get it clear, "the market" is a group of men and women, sitting in flashy offices, shuffling billions of dollars, pounds and yen, to fatten the bank accounts of an unbelievably rich bunch of parasites. They are just a group of very rich, very greedy arrogant people. Yet because of them the governments legislate to keep the people under total surveillance, governments move to the right, states become police states, totalitarian states, states under the hidden rule of the military, as in America. They do this to protect the power and the wealth of those people who run and control "the markets" We are mere chips in their big poker game.

Finally, while I don't want to argue too much about definitions... the U.S. has more prisoners per capita (and in total numbers) than any other nation on Earth.  Wire-tapping and other broad surveillance measures have been codified by the state.  American citizens can now be arrested by the military, detained, and imprisoned indefinitely without the right to a trial.  All of this amounts to the very definition of a totalitarian police state.
