Shame.

February 12th. a day of protest against the oncoming tidal wave of price rises and tax increases. Protests took place across the country, Glasgow was no exception George Square the venue. Despite the lousy Glasgow weather a fair crowd assembled bringing their anger on to the streets. Due to a little problem I was unable to attend but took up a vantage point in a cafe across the road. Well at various protests I have heard the phrase "Shame on You", and thought it rather ineffectual. Sadly as I look around at the various  flags and banners, I could see at least four large Scottish Socialist Party flags, at least two large CP flags, trade union banners, and then I thought, "Shame on you", no where was there a black flag, or red and black flag. Here were these other groupings shouting loud and handing out their literature, to receptive hands but I detected no anarchist display. These were ordinary citizens of Glasgow and were on the street to show their anger at the enforced poverty they are facing, looking for answers. They would be receptive to our ideas if we had been there shouting as loud as the others. After all we have much more to say than those who were there doing the shouting with their display. A missed opportunity,  we should be on the streets where ordinary people gather to voice their anger. One of our comrades did manage to hand out approximately 400 Glasgow Keelies, all well received and eagerly taken. We could have done so much more.

Some photos from the protest.

Angry Time!

Glasgow folks are getting pissed off with the council, having watched them close so many amenities due to Covid are now being informed of a list of those that will not open again. Public libraries among some of those permanent closures. The well loved and much used People's Palace Winter Gardens, now has a shadow of permanent closure hanging over this gem of a Glasgow public owned asset. As myself and others have repeated on a regular basis, that all those billions of pounds paid to keep very rich corporate business with a tidy bank balance would have to be paid back by you and I in the form of austerity. The loss of public services and amenities is just the start, there will be a whole raft of measures to pay back the financial Mafia for that load the state borrowed to keep their corporate friends happy during the pandemic. You ain't seen nothing yet, cuts to education, NHS starved of proper funding, stricter control over benefits and cuts to social services, that will be there plan for starters. Of course we can sit back and moan to each other about hard things are, or we can get organised in our communities and work places, and take our anger and discontent on to the street. Together we can forge a new normal, a fairer society based on mutual aid and sustainability, freed from the poison that is the economy of profit and ever expanding consumption, a society that sees to the needs of all our people. That choice is up to us, don't expect the billionaire parasite class and their minders the state to do that for us. Let your righteous anger flood the streets and change the world we live in.
Saturday afternoon, 5th. June, saw some of those angry Glasgow citizens form up in George Square to voice their determination to fight to hold onto all our public assets, public services and amenities, join them, our wall of anger, determined solidarity and organisation can push back that tide of austerity that is coming our way.

Our Only Help Will Be Self Help.

Anybody who lives in the world of the ordinary people is well aware that we are going through very difficult times. Poverty is rife among our communities, and it is no accident, it is the result of ideology, an ideology that sees big business as the most important entity on the planet. All legislation is shaped to help big business, and that is always at the expense of the individual. So appealing to that machinery to help sort your problems will reap little if any gains. The world is now corporate orientated, the people are to be used to feed that entity. In the grand corporate plan of things, the people are on a downward spiral, as the drive for ever increasing profits, which fuels this greed driven juggernaut, is the root of their ideology.
As the poverty grows and the powers that be, move ever further away from the people, we have to realise that we are on our own, no body is coming to help us. We have to develop self defence systems within our own communities, in co-operation with other communities. we have to devise strategies to empower our communities and the individuals within those communities, we have to grasp solidarity as one of our weapons, the only help we can expect is self-help.
So it is congratulations to the people of Castlemilk, one of Glasgow's large housing estates where, like the rest of them, poverty is endemic. Community spirit and solidarity within the community is growing, community events are on the increase, thanks to the drive and initiative of individuals within the community. Let's see if this attitude and spirit can become infectious, and spread like an epidemic across our city, and other cities.
