A Place To Lay Your Head.

 

         A place of safety and comfort to lay your head is necessary for human dignity, it is not something we should have to aspire to, it is a human right, yet across this so called modern world, millions are denied that dignity, denied that right. Is it possible to satisfy that right in a capitalist society?  Interesting dates for Glasgow folks and Edinburgh folks, talk and discussion on Housing.

Building Urban Autonomy: The Dignified Fight for Homes in Mexico City
5.15-7.00pm, Thursday 2nd June, Room 916, Adam Smith Building, University of Glasgow
        Enrique Reynoso is an urban activist who has spent more than twenty-five years organising for housing rights and autonomous communities in Mexico City. He will discuss his work with the Francisco Villa Independent Popular Front, which is independent of political parties and affiliated to the Zapatista-inspired La Sexta (the Sixth Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle).
         Enrique will discuss the fight for homes in Mexico City, reflecting on a mass social movement which is involved in land occupations, collective house construction and autonomous organising in some of the poorest areas of Mexico City. As such, this event provides a rare opportunity to discover how the principles of Zapatismo are being translated in one of the largest urban conurbations in the world.
      Enrique's talk will be introduced by Neil Gray, University of Glasgow, and Katia Valenzuela uentes, Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice, University of Nottingham who will also translate.        Enrique of the Popular Organisation of the Independent Left “Francisco Villa” will speak on this mass social movement which occupies land, builds social housing for the poorest people and promotes and organises self-managed grass-roots autonomy. Fight For Aylesbury.

      Since the “March for Homes” demo on 31st January, we have re-opened and occupied a part of the Aylesbury Estate in Southwark, South London.

     We are tenants, squatters, and other people who care about how our city is being grabbed by the rich, by developers and corrupt politicians, socially cleansed and sold off for profit.

    The Aylesbury Estate is where Tony Blair made his first speech as Prime Minister in 1997, making empty promises about social housing. Since then, for the past 18 years, Southwark Council and their developer friends have come up with one scheme after another. All with the same aim: to dispossess the residents, demolish their homes, and sell the land.

      In 2002 Aylesbury tenants fought and won a campaign against demolition and voted down the original scheme in a ballot. But now big areas of the estate are emptied and sealed up awaiting the bulldozers, while residents are “decanted” away from the area.

       The same bullshit that we have seen on the nearby Heygate estate, and all across London.

No demolition of the Aylesbury.

No yuppy flats.

Homes for all.

We are here to fight for the Aylesbury.

We are here to fight for our city.

We are here to liberate this space and bring it back to life. Come and join us.

Whose Town Is It Anyway?

     Presents a portrait of a working class community after 25 years on the receiving end of traditional local government. Includes interviews with local community activists, a meeting in a pub, the editorial office of "The Voice" community newspaper and a discussion with unemployed young people. Conveys their sense of powerlessness and anger at the failure of the authorities to get to grips with the massive housing and employment needs of their area.
