May Day, May Day, May Day.

In recent years Glasgow's May Day "celebration" has descended into a sedate controlled march through the city, to a hall where we are expected to sit and listen to our political ballerinas spout how the will lead us to the promised land, the word "celebration" seems to have been misunderstood. Well a group us think that it is time we took hold of the word "celebration" and returned May Day to what it was meant to be, a "celebration", a coming together to chat, mix, to create new friendships, to honour or past working class heroes, to strengthen our bounds of solidarity by communicating with each other, a fun day. We also believe that May Day belongs on The Green, or any other public space, where people can come and go as they please.
To that end a group of us got together last year and held a May Day picnic on The Green, it proved to be a success, and we enjoyed an afternoon of music, poetry and face-painting, plus lots of chat and food. So this year we would like to see it grow to an even great "celebration" of our working class traditions. You can help us do this.

The May Day on the Green Committee is organising a May Day picnic for May 1 at 2 pm on the Glasgow Green near the bicycle area (Free Wheel North). Our purpose is to revive a long-standing radical tradition in Glasgow; an event on the Green to celebrate May Day, the day to demonstrate our solidarity with the struggles of working people around the world and to reaffirm our commitment to a new and better world.
Our picnic on the Green will include poetry, songs and fun for children. Everyone brings food to share with others in a communal meal.
We want this to be an inclusive event with everyone who shares our perspective welcome to join us.
We need your support to make the picnic a success:

--The Spirit of Revolt and the Clydeside branch of the Industrial Workers of the World have endorsed the May Day picnic. Help us to get out the word and get more organisations endorsing the event and publicising it. Contact Eric at echester1943@gmail.com
--We want to have bicycles carrying signs that can go around the city on the morning of May 1 to tell everyone to come to the Green. Contact Bob at bob@citystrolls.com
--We are looking for poets and musicians who would be interested in performing at the picnic. Contact John at john.c.at95@btinternet.com

Win With Open Source.

The world of open source is an Aladdin’s cave of information and resources that can compete with any of the branded computer software systems and programs out there, the bonus is that it is all free, and backed up my an army of keen helpful people on tap to take you through any computer problems you may come across. The cherry on the cake is that it is another way of taking on the big corporate robber barons, and depriving them of the opportunity to rip you off. Sit down, lean back, listen and learn. The latest information piece from Bob at Citystrolls.

Govan, And Common Goods.

If you are in or around Glasgow on January 13th. there is an interesting event from Bob at Citystrolls:
 January 13th 2015 7:00
Pearce Institute

You are invited to a Common Good evening to find out about and discuss the Farmhouse project.

Idea:
Take an old farmhouse part of Govan’s Common Good Fund and turn it into an independent community resource centre. Use the entire process from planning to building as a learning project and include as much of the community as possible.
In this our first of many TownHall meeting. We will set out plans for the Farmhouse and discuss ways
of how folk could become involved. Then open it to the floor for peoples
 input and ideas.

What we will look at on the night is:

- A short presentation of the farmhouse and ideas for future developments in 2015.
- Why independent commons assets are important to our communities.

- Why it is important to different organisations in the wider context.

- The commons in helping to create new community models relevant to
 local people.

- How we protect the Common Good Fund for future generations, by
understanding what it is and using it to empower communities.
Light refreshments and
some snacks will be supplied during evening

Spirit of Revolt.

For a couple of years now, a group of volunteers have been working, tucked away in a wee room at the Mitchell library, at collecting local grassroots history. They are self funding, not attached to any political party, and don't collect any party political material.  The aim is to build a large and useful archive of the everyday struggles of the ordinary people, creating a place where the people can see and identify with their own history, and hopefully learn from that history, as they continue the struggle to improve their lives and the lives of those who will follow them.
Already the archive, named The Spirit of Revolt, has a catalogue of 25 collections, with more still to do, and has made them available on their website, www.spiritofrevolt.info Apart from the catalogue as lists of what is available in the archive, we are also putting images of the items, on the website, for all to view. This is a slow process but we already have hundreds of images on the website and will continue scanning and uploading as best we can.
If you are interested in the non party political struggles of the ordinary people or think you may have material that will add to that history, then send us an email at info@spiritofrevolt.info
Thanks to Bob at citystrolls, we now have a wee film to introduce you to this exciting, and I think necessary, project.   Enjoy:
