Chile.

So the people rise up, the government falls, what next? A sudden rush of "new" parties, a flood of new leaders eager to fill the vacuum, and set up a shiny new democratic representative system, which will be a bold new step back to the old world in new clothing. Or do the autonomous groups with their leaderless direct action ideology fight on to establish the community based horizontalism that will herald in a new world that brings freedom, justice and equality to all, a problem facing Chile at the moment.

The following extract from Crimethinc:

On the weekend of May 15-16, 2021, voters across Chile chose delegates to attend the convention that will compose a new constitution for the country. The right wing was soundly defeated in these elections, but no institutional left party gained a majority, either. The corporate media are heralding this as a victory for “independent” politics—but what will this mean for the autonomous movements that gave the left politicians momentum in the first place? In the following analysis, our correspondent in Chile explores the irreconcilable tension between the politics of representation and the politics of direct action.

Rank And File.

“Our duty, which was the logical outcome of our ideas, the condition with which our conception of revolution and re-organisation of society imposes on us, namely, to live among the people and to win them over to our ideas by actively taking part in their struggles and sufferings” —Errico Malatesta

An interesting article, "If it isn't rank and file, it isn't anarchism" from Anarchist Materialism:
In order for the Anarchist movement to mature in this country, we must address a particularly troubling dilemma. Are we to continue our historical struggle within the working class or do we evolve into a professional class of labor organizers and bureaucrats?? Addressing this question isn’t only about disagreements in methods but in affirming an anarchist conception of organization from the base. Whether in garment factories and ports or in hotels and retail, our focus on the rank and file has always been obvious– without the revolutionary self organization of the workers, we will never overthrow this unjust system of economic and political domination.

Reviving The Alternative To Capitalism.

It seems a shame that there is a tremendous amount of effort and resources expended by left-leaning individuals and groups in the attempt to reform our present system of capitalist exploitation, when in fact it can't be reformed. At least it can't be reformed so as to work for the benefit of the majority. Capitalism is capitalism and can only function the way that it does, it is based on exploitation, plain and simple. Expecting somehow to create a fair and compassionate capitalism through the process of putting pressure on the state is the stuff of myths.  The modern state and capitalism are welded into an economic system that functions from the top down, and all calculations and legislation are based on the economic benefits or otherwise to the system, not the people. Tinkering around with this, and trying to shift a little of that economic benefit towards the people, is playing the beggars game, and will keep the people perpetually walking forward with their begging bowl in hand.
If we want a fair and just society then we have to admit that the present system isn't fit for purpose, it has to go. The next revolution must be a revolution of consciousness, we have to turn things on their head. Top down thinking has to be killed off. It is direct action at grassroots level that all our efforts should be directed, action and power must be based on horizontalism, we have to stop playing by the systems rules. Only when we circumvent, short circuit and ignore the rules of the present system can we hope to create that better world for all.
It would be a much more rapid move towards a fair and just society if all the effort and resources of those left leaning individuals and groups went directly into the community, helping to develop the alternative society we all want, and accepted that the present system has to be destroyed and consigned to the fog of history.
Our comrade Eric Chester puts it well in his article for The Commune:

Reviving the Alternative to Capitalism.

In spite of an economic crisis that has lasted more than five years, and the constantly escalating attack on the public sector, the Left in England and Scotland remains in the doldrums. There is a pervasive sense of despair, a widespread belief that there is nothing that can be done other than to continuously readjust downward our expectations for the future.
Projects such as the People’s Assembly can not provide the organizational framework for a revitalized resistance. This is yet another top-down initiative controlled by the union bureaucracy, in particular UNITE. Furthermore, the social democratic perspective that underlies such projects have totally failed. These projects start with the belief that capitalism can be reformed, and that all that is required to reverse the corporate onslaught is the creation of a broad Left coalition to effectively exert pressure on the state. This broad Left coalition, it is claimed, will be able to exert its influence primarily through the electoral arena, either through the Labour Party or by forming a new progressive party, such as Left Unity.
There is an alternative model, one that starts with the belief that capitalism can not be reformed, but must be changed through a revolutionary transformation of society. From this perspective, fundamental social change does not occur through legislation, but rather as a result of militant, grass-roots movements engaging in non-violent direct action.

Another Squat Under Threat.

The system never rests, it continues with its defence day and daily, it has tremendous resources at its disposal. It has its so called "justice system" (protection of corporate property) backed up by its propaganda machine, that babbling brook of bullshit, the media, and it has its military style police force to back up the dictates of its "justice system". It is with these forces that another squat is under threat, this time in Barcelona. The occupants have asked for support and solidarity from across the world. The system may have powerful resources, but we have all the power in the world, if we come together in solidarity when attacked. Despite the system's well organised power, this world can be ours.

The only criteria we have for support is that it be marked by the very same political content we have had in the Expropriated Bank the whole time. We have always gone for self-organization, autonomy and horizontality in our struggle against capitalism. Therefore, even though it is Catalunya Caixa that is bringing up the case, our struggle is still against the whole of the system in which this bank takes part, in which we also include political parties, mass media and all of the State’s institutions. Any display of solidarity is very welcome as long as it respects this: we don’t want the judge to like us, we don’t want to appear on TV and we don’t want any kind of support from a political party.

HORIZONTALISM IN THE WORKPLACE.

Horizontal Organisation In The Workplace.
A Talk by A.Rice

A Public Event for Radical Glasgow by Martin O'Neil

Tuesday 6th March 7pm-9pm

The Electron Club
CCA
350 Sauchiehall Street
Glasgow G2 3JD

As managerialism kicks in and workplace pressures increase, creating a strong united voice is vital to protecting ourselves as workers. Our Union branch divided the single Rep’s role into 7 jobs,so sharing the power. We found that evolving union structures from a hierarchy to a shared power model was crucial to maintaining a presence in these brutal times.

WORKERS KNOW YOUR HISTORY - THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION.

In spite of the way that Russia end up after the revolution, we should not forget that it started as a social revolution and was hi-jacked by the bureaucratic Bolsheviks. There are lessons to be learnt, the revolution must stay with the people and not be allowed to be controlled by a bureaucratic party mechanism under the control of a handful of party hacks. Horizontal organisation, not hierarchic.
