Artists In Solidarity.

Spirit of Revolt's next big event is a special one, in conjunction with thi wurd. It is formed round an event that took place in 1984, in support of the miners strike, by Artists-in-Solidarity, and was called "Writers for Miners". It took place in what was then The Third Eye Centre, now the CCA, Centre for Contemporary Art. It involved a considerable number of well know singers, song writers, musicians, writers and poets, some who sadly are no longer with us. The audio files of the event survived and with the effort of writer James Kelman, the surviving members have been contacted and agreed to have the files made into a CD and use it as a fund raiser for Spirit of Revolt. most of those involved in the original event and who are still doing there thing, have agreed to come and perform on the night of the CD launch. The CD has 21 tracks, and no matter your interest, I'm sure you will recognise most of the artists.
This will be an opportunity to come and enjoy a rich and varied event with some of the best know musicians/artist/writers/poets from our area. The words of some of the poets who are no longer with us, will be read by members of thi wurd.
        It will be held in:
Mono, Kings Court, Glasgow, on November 28th. 2018.

All funds raised will go to support Spirit of Revolt, archives of dissent.

Your Class Needs You.

The Industrial Workers of the World

2015 national speaking tour...

‘YOUR CLASS NEEDS YOU’

The National Secretary of the IWW, Dave Pike, introduces the fighting union, what it stands for and how it is winning victories for the working class - like higher wages for cleaners, permanency for temps and safety at work for fast food workers. The IWW sees the world as divided by the boss class and the working class, and no-one will fight for our class other than us. We organise so that workers can win for themselves and are not reliant on Union full timers or politicians to fight for them. Come along to this event and find out what the IWW is doing in Europe and around the world, and how you can get involved. Fight for your class.

Do Not Be Bullied.

An Important date for your diary, picket, Partick Job Centre Wednesday 25th. February, 2:30. Prove to the powers that be, that we will not be bullied, we will stand in solidarity with each other.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO
   BE ACCOMPANIED TO ALL
   BENEFITS INTERVIEWS!

You have the right to be accompanied to interviews at the Jobcentre and all DWP offices – and that's official!
A top official writing on behalf of the Chief Executive of Jobcentre Plus for the United Kingdom has stated:
“On the matter of accompanied interviews....Mr McGonigle and his predecessor Bill Wilson have written to Edinburgh Claimants about this and made clear the position for interviews conducted on Jobcentre plus premises. We accept that there will always be times when customers attending our premises feel the need to be accompanied by a friend or advice worker and we will always try to accommodate this where possible.”
(Letter copied to Edinburgh Claimants from Matthew Nicholas, Employers and Stakeholders Director Jobcentre Plus, on behalf of the Chief Executive Darra Singh, letter dated 15 February 2010. Mr McGonigle and Mr Wilson are the current and previous Jobcentreplus local District Managers)
More evidence of this right was provided on 24 th February 2014 when, in response to a Freedom of Information request, the DWP wrote: "Claimants accessing DWP benefits and services can have someone to accompany them to act on their behalf.....”
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/196795/response/486014/attach/html/3/Response%20634.pdf.html
By writing that the accompanier can act on the claimant’s behalf this statement also makes it clear that the accompanier can speak in appointments.
NO NEED TO FACE THEM ALONE
Certainly if you have any interview you think might pose problems we advise you to take a friend or adviser with you. For example, if they are threatening benefits sanctions, trying to change your jobseekers agreement, or force you to go on schemes or apply for jobs you don't want, or if you are called in by the Counter Fraud team, you should NOT face them alone. If you have a benefits medical exam, you should be accompanied. Edinburgh Claimants and Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty accompany people to such interviews, and to interviews at City of Edinburgh Council, all the time. If anyone tries to stop your friend or adviser accompanying you, then tell them the Chief Executive of Jobcentre Plus says this is allowed, and show them the quotes in this leaflet. Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty have also won the right for claimants to be accompanied by a person of their choice to all A4e, Ingeus and JHP workfare provider appointments.

IWW Appeal.

An appeal from IWW:

SUPPORT YOUR BUS DRIVERS!
END METROLINE RACE TO THE BOTTOM:
REINSTATE OSCAR ALVAREZ
Oscar Alvarez has been a London bus driver for 8 1/2 years. He reached the 10th position nationwide in Blackpool Best Bus Driver of the Year 2007 competition which to date is still unbeaten by any Metroline driver.
Now he has been unfairly sacked following a disagreement with a car driver who cut up his bus endangering herself and others. Oscar was simply defending the safety of his passengers and other road users.
Oscar is also a union activist defending his colleagues from a race-to-the-bottom attack on their terms and conditions - coincidence? Gerry Downing, another union activist, was recently sacked for similar reasons but has now won his job back. Other drivers in similar incidents have not been sacked.

Copy the model letter below and email it to Metroline:
MODEL LETTER:
Dear Mr. Sean O’Shea,
Re: Compassionate appeal – Mr Oscar Alvarez
I am writing to you as a member of the public and Metroline bus passenger to express my deep concern about the dismissal of Mr Oscar Alvarez, ex Metroline driver from the West Perivale Garage. Rather than gross misconduct it seems to me that Mr Alvarez actions should be construed as an attempt to correct the driving behaviour of another driver who had not only endangered her own safety, but also that of her baby and other road users. My understanding is that Mr Alvarez is an excellent driver; indeed has won a national award for good driving on behalf of Metroline. It is my firm belief that his action does not amount to gross misconduct and so I am requesting that you accept his appeal for reinstatement.
Yours sincerely
[Your name]
[ PLEASE SEND US A COPY OF YOUR E-MAIL TO london@iww.org.uk ]

  1. PHONE METROLINE
Urge them to reinstate Oscar. Please focus on Oscar’s great record as an outstanding driver and on the very weak merits of his case.
