The Past Can Point To The Future.

Our event last night the film/discussion at the CCA marking the anniversary of the Glasgow/Clydeside 1915 rent strike was a success. Well attended, only a few empty seats, the entertainment was excellent, thanks to Pauline and Shaun, the film was interesting, and varied thanks to Bob, likewise the discussion brought up interesting points and lasted quite a while, we over ran our scheduled time, so a big thanks to all who took party.  The only hope is that those who attended went away with some fresh ideas and a renewed vigour in their desire to affect change.
It is only by coming together and discussing these issues of the past and how they can help us with the struggles we face today that we can hope to bring about that change to society that we all want. fairness, justice and equality.

Our next event marking this remarkable working class victory will be a "Walk of Pride" November the 17th., the date on which the massive demonstration out side the Glasgow Sheriff Court forced the government to introduce the rent restriction act, freezing all rents until the end of the war.
Details:
Date, November 17th.
Time, 1pm.
Assemble, Buchanan Street steps.
Route, to Goma, old sheriff court, George Square,

The 1915 Rent Strike, Then And Now.

The 1915 Glasgow and Clydeside rent strike was a tremendous victory for the ordinary people and was achieved by the coming together of the women of the area and the backing of the workers of the Clydeside industries. We should always remember and celebrate these victories. To that end a group are organising two events to mark the November victory of the rent strike and see what we can learn from that great event. A FREE film show and open discussion in the CCA 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow 11th November, and Walk of Pride, 17th. November.

The film show: From the 1915 rent strikes to Living Rent
We will ask. What is rent, what does it mean? -
Why has it such a hold on people? -
Why does it consume so much of our time? -
      Who invented it?
-     Who decides what it is and what it is worth? -
      What are the alternatives? -
And essentially how do we dismantle the power of the landlords who control it.

WitchHunt.

I am a great admirer of Camcorder Guerillas, so anything they produce, I always feel is worth looking at. This latest event they are hosting at the CCA, 350, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, tomorrow, Friday 24th. May, the film,  WitchHunt is certainly worth a visit.
I'm no lover of the Labour Party nor of Jeremy Corbyn, I see him as another Messiah that will spout how he will lead the people to the promised land. But you and I know that nobody can lead the people to that better world, they have to come together and walk there hand in hand, by themselves. However, I do think that what happened when he was elected leader of the Labour Party highlights how the establishment will always react when it gets the slightest whiff of anything suggesting a social program. The various rightwing diehards will start their devious exercises in poisoning the narrative. Character assassination is always a standard weapon in their armoury. It's how the establishment works.
This should be a very interesting film and discussion, well worth the visit.

About the film:
In 2015, the far right was gaining ground around the world, socialist MP Jeremy Corbyn was elected as leader of the UK Labour Party in a landslide victory. Accusations of anti-semitism within the party immediately began to circulate. Well-known anti-racists and left-wing Jews, such as Jackie Walker, were amongst the chief targets.
WitchHunt is an important 'must-see' film that sets out to investigate the stories and people behind the anti-semitism headlines, examining the nature of the accusations.
Is this a witch hunt, as some claim? If so, who is behind it, and what is the political purpose of such a campaign?
There will be a post-screening panel discussion chaired by journalist and political commentator Iain Macwhirter, with the film's director Jon Pullman, activist & academic Sarah Glyn and Avigail Arbubunel a Jewish Israeli psychotherapist.
The discussion:
The WitchHunt Post screening discussion will be chaired by journalist and political commentator Iain Macwhirter, with the film's director Jon Pullman, activist & academic Sarah Glyn and Avigail Arbubunel a Jewish Israeli psychotherapist.
Iain Macwhirter is the political commentator of The Herald and the Sunday Herald. He is an author and a documentary film and radio presenter as well as a former Rector of Edinburgh University.
Jon Pullman is an activist and filmmaker with a particular interest in the Middle East, where he has travelled widely. Pullman has produced several short documentaries on Palestine, including Children in Chains, about child prisoners under Israeli military occupation. WitchHunt is his first feature length documentary.
Avigail Arbubunel was born and raised in Israel. She served in the Israeli army between 1982-1984. Avigail left Israel to Australia in 1991 and in 2001 renounced her Israeli citizenship in protest. Since then she has been an activist for Palestinian rights and against Israeli settler-colonialism in Palestine. Avigail is the editor of Beyond Tribal Loyalties: Personal Stories of Jewish Peace Activists.
Sarah Glynn is a social and political geographer working at the University of Edinburgh. She is interested in housing, social exclusion and multiculturalism and is the editor of Where the Other Half Lives.

Artists In Solidarity.

Spirit of Revolt's next big event is a special one, in conjunction with thi wurd. It is formed round an event that took place in 1984, in support of the miners strike, by Artists-in-Solidarity, and was called "Writers for Miners". It took place in what was then The Third Eye Centre, now the CCA, Centre for Contemporary Art. It involved a considerable number of well know singers, song writers, musicians, writers and poets, some who sadly are no longer with us. The audio files of the event survived and with the effort of writer James Kelman, the surviving members have been contacted and agreed to have the files made into a CD and use it as a fund raiser for Spirit of Revolt. most of those involved in the original event and who are still doing there thing, have agreed to come and perform on the night of the CD launch. The CD has 21 tracks, and no matter your interest, I'm sure you will recognise most of the artists.
This will be an opportunity to come and enjoy a rich and varied event with some of the best know musicians/artist/writers/poets from our area. The words of some of the poets who are no longer with us, will be read by members of thi wurd.
        It will be held in:
Mono, Kings Court, Glasgow, on November 28th. 2018.

All funds raised will go to support Spirit of Revolt, archives of dissent.

3. Solidarity with IWW member standing trial - Free the Pride 5
Thursday 8/3/18
09.00-12.30
Glasgow Sheriff Court
Panos Theodoropoulos of the IWW was arrested while attempting to prevent the harassment and unjust arrest of a 16 year old during the Glasgow Pride march. The 16 year old had been targeted for holding a sign with the slogan ‘This Faggot Fights Fascists’. The police used extensive physical force on Panos, tackled him to the ground, and subsequently held him in custody for over 30 hours. Thankfully, the police dropped all charges on the 16-year-old, though they still see the need to drag Panos through the courts, for attempting to prevent what they basically admitted was a wrongful arrest!
The arrested comrades were participating in the ‘Red and Black Bloc’, organised by queer members of the IWW as an anti-capitalist, anti-fascist presence in an increasingly commercialised and depoliticized Pride.
In the same Pride march the police arrested 3 trans activists protesting Pride’s decision to have police lead. These arrestees have not been issued court dates as the police continue to ‘search for evidence’. We know from experience that the police don’t like attempts to undermine them or their attempts at ‘community outreach’. We are committed to ongoing solidarity with these arrestees, along with all those in the trans community who face harassment from the police.
At the same time, the fact that Panos’s court date is set for International Women’s Day gives us the opportunity to highlight how seemingly different struggles are intimately connected. Patriarchy, racism and heteronormativity are crucial elements of the system of repression we are living in. As imprisonment and social control increasingly penetrate our precarious lives, we extend our solidarity to the increasing number of women prisoners in the UK and to the members of the trans community who are not only imprisoned but also suffer from being misgendered by the authorities and disproportionately experience violence and harassment. We therefore encourage everyone to participate in the various events organised around Glasgow for IWD (provided below).
When activists are targeted simply for protesting, court solidarity becomes a crucial part of the fight to defend our fundamental rights to protest. Let it be shown that the movement refuses to accept the criminalisation of protesters, whether now or in the future. Let us lay the foundations, in our budding movements, for lasting, practical political solidarity.

As the IWW slogan goes, ‘an injury to one is an injury to us all’.
DROP ALL CHARGES!

JOIN US AT THE SOLIDARITY DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE GLASGOW SHERIFF COURT ON THE 8TH OF MARCH AT 09.00!

Africa In Motion.

There is still time to catch some of this excellent event. Though it started on 28th. October, there is still four days  in which to immerse yourself in this interesting feast of thought.

You may have missed this one, but there are still some gems to see.

Vroegherfs (Early Autumn)

Based on a poem by the highly acclaimed Afrikaans poet NP Van Wyk Louw, Early Autumn uses the expression of dance to convey the message of the poem. The shedding of frivolity, pretence and naiveté of youth, like leaves in fall, to reveal a maturity and strength portrayed as an analogy of the turning of the seasons.
Africa in Motion Film Festival:

Time; 28th October to 6th November
Various locations across Glasgow and Edinburgh -
see http://www.africa-in-motion.org.uk/programme/glasgow/ for Glasgow events
Welcome to the 11th edition of the Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival! We are back and ready to present a packed programme of screenings, discussions, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, pop-up screenings, workshops, exhibitions, live performances and more, across Edinburgh and Glasgow. Artistically innovative and thought-provoking, the programme takes on bold narratives through a range of features, documentaries and shorts.
This year we have taken a unique collaborative approach to curating the festival, with a number of different groups and organisations taking part in choosing what they want to see on screen. Residents from East Lothian and Paisley have programmed two pop-up film festivals taking place within their home regions. We have engaged young programmers to curate a package of events inspired by taking part in our ‘Reviving Scotland’s Black History’ summer school. Postgraduate students from the University of Glasgow made up the selection committee for the Short Film and Documentary Competitions.
This year our festival theme is ‘Time’, through which we explore the past, present and future of Africa, looking at different eras of African history including slavery, colonisation, globalisation and future concepts of Africa. We will also look at cultural notions of time including a focus on Swahili time, the Amharic calendar, and the place of tradition in a modern world. By looking at different political, cultural and social epochs we aim to show how Africa has never been a place bound in past tradition separated from the rest of the world, but has always been influenced by and connected to global movements.
Our festival theme of 'Time' is illustrated through our cover design and trailer created by South African artist, Diek Grobler, who in his own words, drew inspiration from ‘The way in which rock artists have been telling stories with pictures in the flickering light of fires on cave walls for centuries. Cinema in Africa is ancient!’

May Day On Glasgow Green.

Just a reminder, to all those interested in May Day on The Green. We are hoping to get loads of those people who think they can contribute in some way, or who are just interested in seeing this event happen  to come to Sunday's meeting. It will happen if we want it to happen.
So this is a re-posting of a previous article:

The May Day on The Green has created quite a widespread interest, so we are asking all you who wish to see this idea become a reality, please come along to the next meeting and throw your ideas into the hat. The shape it takes will depend on what we all want, and how much we want it, it is up to us. Nothing will happen unless we make it happen.
Details of the next meeting:
PLACE: Electron Club room at the CCA 350, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow
DATE: Sunday, 13 March 2016

Let's Talk About Tomorrow.

Posting again as a reminder, as I think it is important that we come together to discuss the society we live in, and what we can do to change it in the interests of the people, and away from the plundering of the public purse by the corporate greed machine.

2015 national speaking tour...
‘YOUR CLASS NEEDS YOU’

The National Secretary of the IWW, Dave Pike, introduces the fighting union, what it stands for and how it is winning victories for the working class - like higher wages for cleaners, permanency for temps and safety at work for fast food workers. The IWW sees the world as divided by the boss class and the working class, and no-one will fight for our class other than us. We organise so that workers can win for themselves and are not reliant on Union full timers or politicians to fight for them. A Date For Your Diary, Glasgow.

As the state apparatus continues to sell WW1 as a period of glory, and a victory for democracy, there is a multitude of people out there doing their best to propagate the truth. The truth being that WW1, was in fact a bloody, totally unnecessary, imperialist land grab. A war littered with bloody blunders by stupid, blinkered officers and parliamentary ministers, blunders that cost millions of young lives and blighted a generation. All for the power and glory of our imperial masters. One such horrendous blunder was Gallipoli, an idiotic plan, or lack of plan, by the UK fascist, First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, which resulted in around 100,000 dead and almost 500,000 casualties, (Wikipedia
If you're in or around Glasgow on the 25th. of April, you could take the opportunity to find out more about this particular disaster of war, and some of the many others, the Scottish Peace Network will be doing a film show and talk/discussion in the CCA, Glasgow.
April 25, Saturday, 1pm in the cinema room at the Centre for Contemporary Art at 350 Sauchiehall Street. This day marks the centenary of the World War I battle of Gallipoli, a disaster that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands. We will be showing part of a movie made by Peter Weir, and featuring a young Mel Gibson. The movie will be introduced by three short talks, one setting the context of the battle and the connection to Scotland, another on the enormous impact Gallipoli had on New Zealand and Australia and finally a talk putting this centenary event in the context of the counter program to the government's glorification of the war and of militarism. The movie will be followed by a discussion. FREE. All welcome. Sponsored by the Scottish Peace Network.
