Glasgow Document Film Festival And Spirit Of Revolt.

Glasgow's unbeatable Document Film Festival is back with its annual  feast of films, information, entertainment and education. As usual it is centred in the CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow G2 3JD  and runs from the October 9th. until the 12th. October. Well worth some repeat visits.

Glasgow's own Spirit of Revolt will be there with a short film, chat and mini-exhibition about the Spirit of Revolt, on Saturday, 11th. October, 12 until  2pm. This event will be held in the Electron Club in the CCA.
The Spirit of Revolt was founded in 2012 as an archive of dissent which chronicles the story of Anarchists and Libertarian-Socialists in Glasgow, Clydeside and the wider area, past and present. This record of everyday struggle for a fairer life has industrial and cultural activism at its heart- a colourful and empowering history. Come and find out what SOR does, and how you could turn Glasgow’s radical history into useful tools for future action, a must for those interested in OUR history.

The Freedom Theatre was built in the heart of the Palestinian resistance in Jenin Refugee Camp in 2006. The aim was to create a political and artistic movement of theatre and film makers who could fight the Israeli Occupation through art and use cultural resistance as a tool to fight oppression. Due to the provocative nature of the work the theatre has had its building attacked, received numerous death threats, had its members interrogated and imprisoned and in 2011 the theatre’s Artistic Director Juliano Mer Khamis was murdered. Despite this the theatre has managed to tour their work internationally as well as open many productions in Jenin Refugee Camp where it is based.
The discussion will be led by Nabil Al-Raee. Nabil was born in Alrob refugee Camp in Palestine and is an actor, director and teacher. He has worked at The Freedom Theatre since 2006 and took over as artistic director when Juliano Mer Khmais was murdered.
The evening will also include the documentary Arna’s Children which was directed by Juliano Mer Khamis telling the story of a Palestinian theatre group that was established by his mother Arna in Jenin. Juliano went on to found The Freedom Theatre, leading the artistic vision for six years until he was murdered in 2011.

The Spirit of Revolt, a new archive of the struggles and achievements of ordinary people, at the Mitchell library. Watch a wee film of an SOR exhibition and how the project is developing. And after chat to SOR volunteers about the future hopes for the project.

Glasgow to Detroit

Glasgow to Detroit is a shorter version of a longer film shot in Detroit, talking to activists involved in growing and food security. The purpose of this screening is to look at the organisational structures particularly around the city farms of Detroit, and what we can learn from our sister city, around solidarity and protecting the longevity of our exciting and expanding growing community.

We are so perverted by an education which from infancy seeks to kill in us the SPIRIT OF REVOLT, and to develop that of submission to authority; we are so perverted by this existence under the ferrule of a law, which regulates every event in life — our birth, our education, our development, our love, our friendship —that, if this state of things continues, we shall lose all initiative, all habit of thinking for ourselves.

OPENING FILM - Soy Libre: I am Free
Andrea Roggon, Germany, 2011, 86 mins

The Cuba of Raoul Castro: a camera glides through the streets of Havana like the eye of a recording angel witnessing moments of interaction in the everyday lives of ordinary people. Off-camera, other voices talk about their feelings, hopes and fears, and the search for personal happiness in a country at a crossroads between the old revolutionary ideals of Fidel and Che and whatever changes the new economic realities of the 21st century will bring. Faces, voices, sounds. From its dreamlike imagery to the candid insights of the unseen, unidentified speakers, a strikingly beautiful and thoughtful film that becomes a kind of visual poem.

The Director will lead a Q & A with the audience afterwards.

GLASGOW'S OWN DOCUMENT 9, FILM FESTIVAL.

October, a dark and dreich month here in Scotland, but we have one thing that brightens up the month, Glasgow's own International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. This will be the ninth year of this festival, hence its name DOCUMENT 9. and it is appropriately named, 2011 - A Year of Protest. Those who put this festival together, start the hectic and sometimes tiring work immediately after each festival, it takes a year of meetings viewings and all the other bits the film goers don't see, all we see is the wonderful and exciting results, which this year will run from 20 - 23 October. The festival will be screening over 50 International human rights documentary films along with talks, discussions, live art, performances, exhibitions and music. The launch of the festival takes place at the CCA 350 Sauchiehall Street Glasgow, 7pm on the 20 October 2011. The film festival runs in conjunction with a series of exhibitions, running from 13 – 23 October.

All the details and venues of the Film Festival and the Exhibitions can be found on their website

GLASGOW'S DOCUMENT FILM FESTIVAL --- 2011.

Every year the Glasgow Document Film Festival comes around, and every year they never fail to entertain, inform and provoke discussion. This year I'm sure will be no exception, so take my advice and pop in to a worthwhile enlightening experience.

Growing Bolder - Free Film Afternoon

2.00pm - 4.00pm
Thursday 9th June 2011
CCA, Club Room
350 Sauchiehall Street
Glasgow
This is a relaxed afternoon of films selected from Document Film Festival and Plantation Productions. Two films will be screened followed by questions and answers session with a panel of the film-makers

The Govan Banners is a film about the Spanish Civil War made by Govan Seniors Film Club based at Plantation Productions, inspired by banners from 1938 which were found in an attic in 1979 by one of the group members. The banners link Govan with the Spanish Civil War through the Scottish democracy movement. The film shows the group’s quest to find out more about this.

You Always Think There’s Nothing There is a thought provoking film made with the 'Damned Rebel Bitches' - an independent social history group of mature women based at Tollcross Community Centre in Edinburgh. The film explores what poverty means today for older people across Scotland’s capital and looks behind the glamorous façades of tourism and culture. A story about self respect! Part of 'Making A Difference, Stories From The Fight Against Poverty In Scotland. http://www.makingadifferencescotland.co.uk/
