May all those who fund, plan, build and run prisons, rot in hell. They are the most barbaric institutions in any society. To treat humans as other than human is about as low as you can crawl, but the state defends these blots on civilisation, and builds a whole structure to run them and a system to fill them, and has no intentions of removing them.
The following case is not the first nor unique, such treatment of individuals by the states across the globe, is all to common and shown to be acceptable to those in power. Only the mass movement of people can bring an end to this savagery and build a society that treats all humans as human.Lamia. Greece. The health condition of hunger striker Giannis Michailidis, who has been on hunger strike for 44 days and is monitored at Lamia General Hospital, is extremely critical.Originally published by Barrikade Info. Translated by Riot Turtle.
First of all, I would like to emphasize and point out that although the law allows each prisoner to appoint his personal doctor to examine and supervise him, in this case I was not allowed to examine him personally, despite having been authorized to do so, but our communication took place between the staffs and in the presence of a police officer right next to me, thus suspending medical confidentiality, since he heard and observed all our communication.
Giannis’ white blood cells number has fallen so far below the lower normal limit that it now poses a danger to the hunger striker. Leukopenia leads to severe immune deficiency. Platelets are also very low, and thrombocytopenia can cause severe and threatening bleeding. He has worsening anemia, liver dysfunction, and hypocalcemia.
Clinically, the hunger striker now reports experiencing acute precordial pain with the slightest exertion (signs of myocardial ischemia) and severe pain in his left kidney. The physicians treating him have informed him that he is now at risk of severe osteoporosis.
Gianni’s extremely difficult situation and struggle are exacerbated by the conditions of his incarceration. Completely isolated in a four-walled cell. No window, except for a small skylight at one side, and no television (although the psychiatric examination he underwent when he was admitted to the hospital did not reveal any pathological findings). In other words, he is physically and sensory isolated, without the slightest constant support, supervision and care from his family, his lawyer and his doctor.
All of this harms the hunger striker, causes additional stress and contributes to the destabilization of his body, as it is a kind of torture.
And the paradox is that all this has to happen in this torturous way in a hospital, where the ethical and moral rules of the hospital should not be violated and all patients must be treated in decent conditions.
For my part, I will once again emphasize the seriousness of the health condition of hunger striker Giannis Michailides, and call on all responsible authorities to find an immediate solution to prevent a fatal outcome of the hunger strike.
The personal physician of Giannis Michailides Pantelia Vergopoulou – NHS director.

Fire Ant.
I love anarchist serials, and papers that can be spread around the community, workplace and on the street. It is a wonderful simple way of spreading our ideas and it can reach outside the social media bubble. All such literature is important, but one that I think should always get a little extra push from us by spreading it around is those serials, periodicals papers that support anarchist prisoners. Locked in state cages for their beliefs, we mustn't forget them. Fire ant is one and it is available for free download and printing, so why not do a few and spread them around.
The following from Enough is Enough:
Fire Ant is a quarterly publication focused on spreading the words of anarchist prisoners and generating material solidarity for our imprisoned friends.

Begun as a collaboration between anarchist prisoners and anarchists in Maine, Fire Ant seeks to raise material aid for anarchist prisoners while fostering communication between anarchists on both sides of the walls.
Issue #13 is a special June 11th edition of Fire Ant, featuring Sean Swain’s June 11th statement, thoughts on prisoner support from Lauren Swain, an interview with Jennifer Rose, a text by Comrade Z, an autobiographical piece by Thomas Meyer-Falk, Toby Shone’s June 11th statement, Michael Kimble on Afrikan anarchism, updates on Eric King, and the 2022 June 11th call.

UK. Anarchist prisoner Toby Shone is being held in the Category B facility HM Prison Parc, a privately run prison in South Wales, despite being in reality a Category C or D prisoner who was eligible for Release on Temporary License (ROTL) on 21 January 2022, according to paperwork he received on 26th March 2022. ROTL is home leave from prison in preparation for release. Category B prisoners are not eligible for home leave.

redress as a Category B, High Risk prisoner where he is not eligible for ROTL (home leave). A probation official told Toby previously that his categorisation is a consequence of his anarchist beliefs, and the fact that he is considered by the authorities to act on those beliefs. This decision has been taken at a level above the Offender Management Unit (OMU) which is the unit Toby personally deals with.
His beliefs are also the reason that police are pursuing a Serious Crime Prevention Order against Toby which will allow the police to monitor and control all aspects of Toby’s life and monitor his associates for five
years. The Order means he can be imprisoned again for an additional five years should he breach the Order which is so intrusive, it would be
impossible not to. The hearing for the SCPO is on the morning of 6 May 2022 at Bristol Crown Court.
Toby was ghosted from HMP Bristol on Friday 18th March. While at Bristol, the prison withheld two parcels of legal papers sent by his legal team and which he has never received.
He was permanently confined to his cell at HM Prison Parc between March 18th and March 29th with no exercise, no time out of his cell except for one shower, minimal interaction (guards frequently just throw his food on the floor and shut the door), and refusal of healthcare which he requested due to an eye infection (he has now received treatment).
Unlike most prisons where you can purchase your own fruit and vegetables to supplement the prison food which is unfit for human health, HMP & YOI Parc deny prisoners this possibility by designating fresh food a “security risk”. They also force prisoners to choose between phone credit to stay in touch with loved ones and necessities from the prison shop. In most prisons, phone credit is additional to the weekly spend on extra food and toiletries, but at Parc phone credit has to be bought out of the weekly spend allowance.
Director of HM Parc, Janet Wallsgrove was awarded an OBE this year by the Queen for “services to the prison service”. HM Prison Parc is a leader in prison slavery and routinely locks young offenders and adults up beyond the legal limit. One prisoner on Toby’s wing has been locked up for 24 hours a day for 18 days. This is torture, but no surprise that Parc is running this kind of regime – this prison is run by G4S, whose guards are famous for murdering Angolan man Jimmy Mubenga on a crowded passenger plane on 12 October 2010.

They stand there, those innocuous looking buildings, could be anything, but for the usual nameplate HM Prison---At first glance they do not say arbitrary punishment, cruelty, inhumanity, repression or viciousness. The propaganda element of the judiciary menagerie and the various mouthpieces of the state, weave the illusion that they are correction centres for bad people. So if you are a good and obedient citizen, then you will never need to trouble yourself about these institutions of state repression. However we know that there are innumerable innocent people enmeshed in the tentacles of these inhumane institutions, we know that their idea of correction is to create a submissive, obedient population. We know of the countless case of "miscarriage of justice". They are there to protect the wealth and power of the privileged few.
On Tuesday 08/02 at 19.00 p.m I was brought in by the anti-terrorist service outside my partner’s house in Ano Poli. The reason for this is the previous arrest- in the morning hours of the same day- of Thanos Hatziangelou and Georgia Voulgari accused for placing an incendiary device in the institution of National and Religious Reflection. I was transferred to the General Police Directorate of Thessaloniki(GPDT), where hours later I was announced of my arrest on criminal charges and membership in the organization “Anarchist Action”. I remained detained for two days in the basements of GPDT where on Friday 11/02 I passed by an investigator and a prosecutor where my pre-trial detention was announced.
Originally published by Athens Indymedia.
Amidst the vortex of a comedic yet tragic process unfolding against me, I unequivocally and strongly declare innocent of all the accusations against me. I am currently imprisoned without ANY evidence linking me to any involvement in what is being attributed to me, without ANY mentioned of my name in the anti-terrorist testimony in relation to the organization’s activities. The only connection that is being attempted is through the house I was renting (allocated next to the shop that I kept with my associates) as well as next to my partner’s house (where I actually lived) and which I had given as a quarantine and recovery space by covid- 19.
I make efforts to stand tall up against this manufactured conspiracy that deprives me of my freedom. I try to keep my mind alert and clear so that I can stand up to this injustice that drowns me. I try to stand up to this arbitrariness who thinks my life is a pawn on an invisible chessboard. Against those who take human relationships and use them as they wish and as it suits them, to compose the puzzle they design.
I will make it.
Solidarity to my friend, colleague and comrade Thanos Hatziangelou and comrade Georgia that I met a few days ago in the basements of GPDT.

Alternatives.
How much longer will it take for humanity to permeate its way through our society. We have legislation making it virtually impossible for refugees to seek refuge when fleeing torture/deprivation/persecution/war and all its violent array of consequences. We have prisons that treat those enmeshed in its tentacles as less than human. We have poverty/homelessness/deprivation in the midst of unimaginable wealth, and still we hear the mantra from those with all the wealth, privileges and power, that this is the only way to run our society. Sooner or later we will all have to stand up and say loud and clear, this is a load of bullshit, there are alternatives that can see to the needs of all our people. No prisons, no persecution, no exploitation.
The following from Act For Freedom Now:
On 24/12, comrade Haris Mantzouridis was discharged from the psychiatric hospital in Dafni and transferred to the Prisoners’ Psychiatric Hospital in Korydallos prison. He was immediately placed in “quarantine”, where he will remain from 4 to 7 days (it is not certain exactly how many).
The conditions there are deplorable, which reflects the general conditions of detention in the prison in the midst of a pandemic. He is kept in a very small room with three other prisoners, and new ones are added every day, which increases the actual chances of catching covid. The window is broken, so it is very cold, the mattresses are ripped, broken glass, blood and excrement on the floor, food is thrown away by all the prisoners, the possibility of communication with his own people is minimal.
It is obvious that these conditions of detention further aggravate the already shaken mental and physical health of the comrade. We will be back for any further developments.
No one alone – let there be no one alone in the hands of the State!
Immediate release of comrade Harry Mantzouridis!

I didn’t know I was Harry Houdini
26/11/2021
Today I was taken from the cells of G-wing, Bristol prison to the City Hospital under a security escort. This was to detect any reoccurrence of cancer in my abdomen and pelvis. In the reception area of the prison, I had the usual strip search, and I was forced to change out of my own clothes into prison-issue clothes.
This offended my dignity as even when I was being held in Wandsworth prison in London under “antiterrorist” conditions I could at least go to the hospital in my own clothes. Whilst I was waiting for the screws to finish the paperwork, I got a glance of my cover sheet at my file – “escape list” marked in red. I was shackled to a screw with an escort and another two and I was driven by four screws in an unmarked van to the radiology unit. Along the way and back, of course, I was a witness to the pathetic, belittling ,racist, misogynistic “chats” of the screws who consider themselves experts of all aspects of life. At the radiology unit there were discussions between the medical staff and screws with some referral to their superiors, as, without any foresight on the screws part, they hadn’t realised that I couldn’t be shackled inside the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine. Despite the MIR machine being within a sealed room with a single door, I was forced to wear a pair of plastic zip tight cuffs which were tightened so tight they cut into my wrists.
Due to my loud protests and demands for them to be removed, the screws cut them off with difficulty and pain and placed a second pair almost no less tight on my hands. I was then bound like so inside the MRI in considerable pain and discomfort and in no point in time did the medical staff ask if I was ok or raise any issue of me being treated like this while being told to “be calm” by the screw who had put these cuffs on me and who had remained inside the procedure room. If you have ever been inside an MRI you will know that you are already confined inside an impossibly narrow tiny tube wrapped up in sensitive equipment whilst a torus of magnets whirls around you at deafening volume.
Hardly an easy place to escape from at the best of times. To add an insult to this injury the MRI technician gave the “panic button” which is a kind of pad the patient squeezes to indicate that there is an emergency, not to me who was undergoing the test, but to the disgusting screw who had remained into the room to observe me. One of the screws waited outside the room and one other, for unknown reasons, was asked by the technician to attend INSIDE the adjacent imaging room where the scans were being processed and the technician acted. This final fact is the most angering since these screws are not even medical staff nor technicians but merely lock and unlock doors, shout and abuse the imprisoned every day. I am not writing this as a “victim of oppression” nor to “establish my rights”. I write this to denounce the situation and to explain to others what to expect and especially for all the other prisoners who confront cancer.
It is this civilization that makes us all sick. Strength to all those prisoners who have dreams of freedom in their hearts!

Despite the brutality, arbitrary punishments and isolation of those hellholes called prisons, vibrant life, stories and poetry keep coming out, vindication of the undying desire for freedom and the unquenchable love of life. The journal Fire Ant tries to capture that lust for life and freedom that is locked in those institutions of state repression. Poetry, essays and letters from anarchist prisoners, a symphony to freedom and the human spirit that continues regardless of the state's savage attempt to silence that flame of human individuality. Always well worth supporting and certainly always an excellent read.

Killer State.
We were shocked and saddened to learn of Cory Cardinal’s death from a suspected overdose this week, so we headed out late on the night of June 12th to paint the walls of our neighbourhood in his memory.
Cory was a poet, writer, artist, and prison organizer from Sturgeon Lake First Nation. We came to know of him and his work during the Saskatchewan prison hunger strikes in the earlier days of the pandemic, when he acted as an organizer and did media work from inside while participating.
Cory understood and articulated the connections between the systems of prison and colonialism and he fought, inside and out, to bring them both down.In Cory’s words:Our thoughts, solidarity, and love are with his family, friends, and comrades. We’ll continue to direct our rage towards prisons, colonialism, and this world that criminalizes and kills people who use drugs.
It is true we have been targeted as Aboriginal men by a racist system. Despite this epidemic of incarceration, our resilient community of modern Aboriginal warriors has survived by will and creative ambition to prevail over many an enemy of poverty, addiction, and racism to find community and belonging and acceptance in this mainstream model of humanity. It is not by our own standards, for we are an oppressed people.

State Violence.
Everyone knows, prisons are hell-holes of violence and repression, "correction centres", "reform centres" and other such labels are just state camouflage to conceal the true nature of their savagery and purpose. They are state sponsored institutions to crush dissent and protect the wealthy and powerful, Sadly some of the violence comes from those incarcerated not only the prison guards. The guards are quite happy to let the inmates do the violent repression, it can make their job easier. Before freedom can flourish, prison walls must fall.
The following from Act For Freedom Now:
On 24 May 2021, anarchist fighter G. Dimitrakis was murderously attacked with multiple blows to the head by a group of prisoners in Domokos prisons where he is currently being held. Following the attack, Giannis was transferred to the hospital of Lamia in a critical condition. Eight days on, although our comrade has escaped the danger to his life, the damage done is still very serious. Giannis’s strength and mental vigor make us optimistic that he will also come out of this battle victorious.
The cause of the attack on Giannis was his refusal to accept and subordinate himself to the authoritarian and brutal laws that the prison mafia are trying to impose on the prisoners in full consensus with the prison services. The cause of the attack is that he has steadfastly defended his ethical, value and political substance as anarchist, as an insurgent, as a social struggler. The cause of the attack was his refusal to kowtow to those who want to humiliate and violate the weaker prisoners to affirm their prestige in their sick “code of conduct”. It is his refusal to subject himself to the unfavourable correlations and mentalities that prevail nowadays in prisons and overall in social and class antagonism. So his refusal to accept prison as a life condition is ultimately his refusal to submit to the State and its mechanisms.
Strength to the anarchist fighter Giannis Dimitrakis

Please let us know any other access needs you have by emailing info@cape-campaign.org The demonstration will start at 2pm to allow people to travel there from across the UK. There will be speeches from campaigns fighting police violence, prisons and detention.
Why:
The Government are planning to build a 1440 bed mega-prison at the site of HMP Full Sutton. It will lock up thousands of people for years to come if built.
MP Full Sutton has a long legacy of violence and racism. Officers act with impunity in the rural prison with beatings, racist abuse and violence as common occurrences.
Prison officers recently attacked Dwayne, a Black Muslim man held in the segregation unit. Dwayne was severely beaten by 4 white officers in a racist attack. He was left vomiting and dizzy in a cell covered in blood, denied medical treatment and access to a lawyer. His applications to have photos taken of his injuries have been refused by officers. It was three days until the prison staff cleaned the blood from his cell.
The prison is holding Kevan Thakrar in solitary confinement in the prison’s segregation unit. Kevan is a long term prisoner who has been campaigning for his freedom since 2008 when he was wrongly convicted due to systemic racism, ID parades and police corruption. Kevan was convicted under the racist Joint Enterprise Doctrine and the prison has repeatedly acted with violent retribution where he has tried to defend himself. Learn more about his case here: justiceforkevan.org
Kevan has been held in a dirty punishment cell with no electricity since the middle of April 2021. This demonstration is a demand to get him transferred out of the prison.
HMP Full Sutton is also the site of one of the country’s Close Supervision Centres. These are ‘prisons within prisons’, the UK equivalent of the USA’s ‘Supermax’ prisons. They are the highest security and most repressive prison units within the country, where prisoners are held in solitary confinement in an extremely controlled environment for long periods of time. Kevan Thakrar was placed in the CSC system after he defended himself against a racist attack by prison guards in 2010.
Kevan’s case and the broader CSC system have recently been the focus of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. They wrote: “…we express our grave concern at the indefinite and prolonged detention of Mr. Thakrar in what appears to be conditions of solitary confinement. Both in this individual case and in terms of general policy, we are particularly concerned at the reported use of prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement in Close Supervision Centres, thus predictably inflicting severe pain or suffering amounting to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, or even torture.”

Attack----
The following is a short extract, taken from Nikos's booklet, "I Attack, Therefore I Am". You can find it on Act For Freedom Now,
“Instead of an epilogue…”
Comrades, the dawn of this new age arriving with the most relentless and revolting visage, while we are in the throes of condensed historical development, in this period of voracious capitalist development that destroys and flattens out all life on this planet, we simply can not speak of revolution and anarchy without promoting a consistent method of struggle that with its antagonism will make wounds on the seemingly invulnerable body of sovereignty. We live in changing times, from which can be born a liberating perspective. In this age in which we live we must make a definitive divorce with hesitation and procrastination; every lost minute, every wasted moment is ground won for the enemy. The war of all against all that capitalism promotes is not a figure from the apparently safe distance of the capitalist periphery, but a living reality experienced by millions of people who literally have had their lives thrown away on the trash heap, reported upon through statistical data extracted by technocrats and military analysts, all of which shows how economic policies and their developments are opening up fronts of a warzone. It is beyond my understanding how anyone who wants to be called an anarchist can remain unconvinced of the urgent necessity for the escalation and increase of revolutionary war, simply by taking a look at what is happening around them. Against the blind violence of wars between states, we propose the violence of insurrection that blows up social conventions. Let’s definitively break with the modern culture of subordination and degradation. The stances of each person are not views of an objective and standoffish neutrality, they demonstrate choices and attitudes related to the logic of societal conditions. Those who postpone for tomorrow in every possible way attacks against representatives of power, only give a breath of life to domination and its organization of mass extermination
From our side, the proposal submitted did not assert a monopoly over anarchist action, but gave a view of informal organization and the possibilities we can get if we are serious and persistent in our intentions and our actions to cut the Gordian knot of introversion. We want to form an international informal coordination that will be the bridge between public and conspiratorial action, that will be the next developmental step for polymorphic anarchist struggle, attempting to fulfill and qualitatively deepen all the relevant historical experiences of the past. The fact that this text comes to an end does not mean that it dealt in detail with all the issues and thoughts it set out to deal with. Moreover, the aim is not to become one rigidly demarcated proposal, but a bet on a struggle that will be enriched and will move through actions, thus basing its direction on the one thing that can be held to be essential, the endless movement and creative destruction of the anarchist struggle.“Hm! And how the fools will scream: stubborn anarchists! Who can understand the storm that roars in our minds? Who could be aware of our hunger for pleasure, for life? Who can understand our defeat stemming from human cowardice? We are alone. We did not find comrades ready to participate in the struggle for the recovery of life. That is why we lost. And one of us vanished. The other remains with his eyes stuck on the horizon. He could not, and did not depart. This is our destiny. Will we find comrades? Otherwise, each of us in his own way will disappear silently or rowdily from the scene of the world. A chapter is closed. A chapter of struggle, hopes, illusions. The end, however, has not yet come. As these strange, unusual lives come to an end, we get to a point where we realize that it would have been better if they had never been born. And that’s all there was to say.” -Bruno Filippi
Strength and solidarity to all anarchist prisoners! Let’s organize the uncontrollable freedom of human dignity! Anarchy means attack!Nikos Romanos

Vindictive State.
One of those who received the longest sentence, 19 years with no appeal, is Vangelis Stathopoulos, here is his statement from Korydallos Prison:
Solidarity is judged on my person with the heaviest accusations, because I helped an injured comrade. My prosecution and trial are based solely on political criteria, on the attitude of dignity and solidarity that I have consistently followed throughout my life. I have nothing to dispose of but my own life, I have nothing to defend despite the constant struggle against the murderous rage of the State and capital! If my practical solidarity is the crime for which I am convicted and imprisoned, I declare myself unrepentant!
P.S.: Closing here, I would like to greet from the bottom of my heart the comrades who stayed by my side, in every way, those who stood by me and continue to fight. Knowing that the conditions are adverse and things are difficult outside, they did not desist! And to renew the appointment on the streets, where I grew up and have never forgotten.

An Appeal.
The Greek state is ahead of the game in Europe, when it comes to trying to crush dissent, though not by much, most states are walking the same path, all at their own pace.
The following two articles apply to the Greek state, but similarities will be found across the globe.
At the end of last December the Greek government approved a reform of the national penitentiary system that, in addition to other measures that worsen prison conditions, establishes that those convicted of terrorism cannot access “rural prisons”, more “open” institutions to which long-term prisoners have access. The approval of this law has led to the immediate transfer of political prisoner Dimitri Koufontinas from the rural prison of Kassevitia.
Dimitri is a comrade convicted for participating in the revolutionary organization 17 November, in prison since 2002. The new set of laws stipulates that inmates in rural prisons are reclassified and then transferred to the last prison they were in. In Dimitri’s case it should have been the Athenian prison of Koridallos. However, the prison administration decided to transfer him, manipulating the transfer papers, to Domokos prison. Although there are no differentiated circuits in Greece, in recent years, the prison administration has turned Domokos into a “hard” prison.
Such a punitive transfer is aimed at striking a comrade who has always struggled: as a free man, in courtrooms, in prison. Since his capture he has participated in numerous protests and has been on four hunger strikes. This repressive manoeuvre is not only aimed at annihilating Dimitri Koufontinas but also forms part of the Greek’s state repressive project: crushing the most radical and combative parts of society to
avoid the hypothesis of future and general conflicts.
Faced with the transfer, Dimitri Koufontinas decided to strive once again, using his body as a weapon and last resort. Since 8 January he has begun a hunger strike which will continue indefinitely until he is transferred to Koridallos prison. As the strike continues, the comrade is in a critical and precarious condition in Lamia hospital: according to the doctors he could collapse at any moment. During the strike there were many initiatives and solidarity actions throughout Greece and beyond:
protests, demos, wall writings, banners, attacks against multiple objectives (politicians, banks, post offices, etc.). But time is running out and now we think extra efforts are needed. Dimitri’s struggle is also the struggle of each of us.
The creation and expansion of international ties is as crucial as ever so we are calling for an INTERNATIONAL day of solidarity and action on FRIDAY 12 FEBRUARY to support Dimitri Koufontinas.
THE DEMAND OF HUNGER STRIKE MUST BE IMMEDIATELY ACCEPTED
INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY IS OUR WEAPON
