Govan, And Common Goods.

If you are in or around Glasgow on January 13th. there is an interesting event from Bob at Citystrolls:
 January 13th 2015 7:00
Pearce Institute

You are invited to a Common Good evening to find out about and discuss the Farmhouse project.

Idea:
Take an old farmhouse part of Govan’s Common Good Fund and turn it into an independent community resource centre. Use the entire process from planning to building as a learning project and include as much of the community as possible.
In this our first of many TownHall meeting. We will set out plans for the Farmhouse and discuss ways
of how folk could become involved. Then open it to the floor for peoples
 input and ideas.

What we will look at on the night is:

- A short presentation of the farmhouse and ideas for future developments in 2015.
- Why independent commons assets are important to our communities.

- Why it is important to different organisations in the wider context.

- The commons in helping to create new community models relevant to
 local people.

- How we protect the Common Good Fund for future generations, by
understanding what it is and using it to empower communities.
Light refreshments and
some snacks will be supplied during evening

Govan Fair Bike Fun.

Thanks Bob for the info.

Common Good Project - Glasgow

Hey there
Friday June 7th is the Govan fair
-->

I don't know if you have been to a Govan Fair but basically the whole of Govan and beyond is on the street - a sight to behold. A few of us came up with the idea of having a bike procession at the fair and we want you there. The procession starts of at Fairly street Ibrox (The street Galgael is on near Ibrox Tube) at 7:30 and ends up at Elder park.
We will be helping folk to bling (decorate) their bikes before the procession starts and get some banners flying. We don't have any funds etc for this so we are just relying on folks initiative and ingenuity:) Its a case of turning up on the day in biking solidarity. We will be doing bike stuff in the garden on the Fair Saturday Fun Day to. (12 - 5)
We will be building bee hotels and other stuff with the Glasgow Science Festival and various groups from around the community will be around helping out. Come and see your garden, help out or just enjoy the activities.
Will have more details near time. Be good to see you there in some form. Please spread the word, if you want to do something in particular or need any info let me know. CH in the common good. Bob

The Commons And Common Goods.

This land is our land, not a song but a statement of fact, in the words of the football pundit, "We wis robbed".

A reminder:
     Kinning Park Complex Sunday 26th May 2:00 - 5:00

There will be a small Radical Independent Bookstall at this event.

‘Show the people that our Old Nobility is not noble, that its lands are stolen lands – stolen either by force or fraud; show people that the title-deeds are rapine, murder, massacre, cheating, or court harlotry; dissolve the halo of divinity that surrounds the hereditary title; let the people clearly understand that our present House of Lords is composed largely of descendants of successful pirates and rogues; do these things and you shatter the Romance that keeps the nation numb and spellbound while privilege picks its pocket.’

WORKERS KNOW YOUR HISTORY.

Thanks Bob for the link.

Lifted from LandMatters:
I have an original copy of Tom Johnston‘s Our Scots Noble Families from 1909. It is a treasure. It was reprinted by Argyll Publishing in 1999. Here, reprinted, is the opening chapter entitled A General Indictment. Read it and remember that politics and political writing once had revolutionary potential.

A General Indictment
Before proceeding to analyse the methods by which each of our Scots noble families rose to fortune, and before I examine in detail the origin of their various divinities, dignities and privileges, it is advisable to take our canvas and lay on in primary colours a general and comprehensive indictment of Scots landlords as a class. The histories of our land have been mostly written to serve the political purposes, and flatter the conceits of our aristocracy. When the historian knew of happenings calculated to cast odium on our landed gentry, he carefully excised the records, and where he did not know, he was careful to assume, and lead others to assume, that the period of which he was ignorant were periods of intense social happiness, wherein a glad and thankful populace spent their days and their nights in devising Hallelujahs in honour of the neighbouring nobleman. And that is why the history of Scots mining is wrapped in darkness: that is why we never hear of the hundred and fifty years slavery, and why the collier of to-day does not know that his ancestor of a century ago was a two legged chattel, bought, sold, and lashed as were the cotton plantation negroes in pre-Civil War times. There are no popular histories of the thefts of the Klaan and Abbey lands. Even the sparse records of neyfship are never dragged out to the popular gaze.
     A democracy ignorant of the past is not qualified either to analyse the present or to shape the future;
