Our Dear Green Place.

 

        The ever decreasing green places in our city is a frightening prospect. A city with little or no green parks is a concrete desert. Even those places that are still green and pleasant within our city are under attack, because of the continual renting them out to commercial interests. This is not what these green and pleasant spaces were created for, they were not created to make profits for commercial concerns, they were spaces for our citizens to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Places within our city for kids to run free and safe, for people to walk in peace, to relax, for safe open air leisure, for an escape form the concrete and traffic. Without them our lives are diminished, impoverished, and our kids are deprived of that essential in growing up, the ability to run, play and relax in pleasant and safe surroundings.

        These paces must be protected and preserved for our leisure and pleasure, not as opportunities for the commercial world to cream off ever greater profits.

    Two events concerning the commercialisation of green space and what we can do about it

A discussion (Thursday 13th Dec)

       Each summer the volume of paid events occupying our parks is expanding. The disruption to ordinary park users who see the park as an escape from the chaos and consumerism of daily life is worsening. Many park users see these disruptions to their enjoyment of using and living round the park as out of sync with what the park is there for.
      We will be discussing these and other park and green space issues and some that that are also enjoyable and more conducive to park use – and that could help to stop the use of our parks for commercial profiteering.

A workshop (Sunday 16th Dec)

The workshop will be around. How to find out things about parks, greens pace, commons and how to use the “Community Empowerment Act”. The general public need to be heard in this conversation in protecting community assets. We will be looking at the various, forums, assemblies and mechanisms, that could help to enable groups as well as individuals to take part in this important dialogue.

Drowning In A Sea Of Propaganda.

        As the UK theatre of lies, our so called "general election", trundles on, trying to get you to support one illusion or the other, we should take note that we swim in a sea of propaganda. The party machines and the babbling brook of bullshit, the mainstream media, weave the smoke and mirrors of fake news, lies, propaganda, speculation and supposition, with truth lying somewhere in the sludge well below the surface. We live in a world created and manipulated by propaganda, spewed out by powerful factions and big business with vested interests against the interests of the ordinary people. Any idea of democracy in  a society where the truth is absent is an illusion, those who produce the propaganda do so to keep that illusion alive. Question everything, accept that the interests of the corporate world and the power mongers, and that of the ordinary people are diametrically opposed, incompatible, propaganda is there to make you believe the opposite.

The Youth Own Tomorrow.

       We oldies are the caretakers of the future, and we don't seem to have done a very good job so far, but it is the youth that will inherit that future, we owe it to them to give them all the support we can as they try to shape that future as a better place for all our people. In Glasgow, the housing scheme of Castlemilk seems to be leading the way, more steam to their elbow, well done Castlemilk Against Austerity.

Save Our Dear Green Place.

          It is an ongoing tactic of our City Fathers, sitting in the Kremlin in George Square, Glasgow. They act as a snatch squad, making frequent grasps at parts of our city's green spaces, and handing them over to the developers. This has been going on for years and is still going on. The latest attempt at a snatch has been the North Kelvin Meadow and Children's Wood. An open public space cared for and used, by the locals, and others further afield. A tremendous asset to our city, its kids and adults alike, wanted and managed by the locals, it adds immensely to the quality of life of those who live within its reach. So why destroy it or any part of it? The answer to that question is profit.

       Come out and support this campaign, Glasgow's green and public spaces are disappearing at an alarming rate, we are fast becoming a hard tarmac place, it has to stop somewhere, if not here, then where?

         "It is staggering the amount of energy and commitment locals have dedicated to the North Kelvin Meadow to protect and promote their local green space." There will be a Public Hearing this Tuesday 6th and 7th of September to determine the future of North Kelvin Meadow and Children's Wood. There will be a site visit at some point on either 6th or 7th so please come to land on those days. Angela Constance will make the final decision after receiving the report from the hearing.          The future of the meadow and wood is about to be decided, there will be a Public Hearing this Tuesday and Wednesday. If the plans for housing are rejected then this could be a test case for other areas.

May Day On The Green.

Bring MAY DAY back to the Green!

        Tired of the ritual Glasgow May Day, a boring walk through the city, to sit in a hall listening to "our leaders", pontificating and spouting about how they will save the world. Well, a group of us are trying to bring May Day back to The Green and make it what it was meant to be, a family day, a fun day, a day to celebrate the solidarity of the working class.

       Sunday, May 1st we are organising a family get-together/picnic in the Green, Based at Free Cycle North, with activities and bikes, in and around the green. With a little bit of the history of May Day. Bring what you expect to find, it is our day. It is early days yet, but we expect face painting, music, singing and performance poetry, among other events, and a picnic, with some eats. It should kick off on The Green around 1:00pm and end by 3:30pm app. on May 1st.
You can have your march around the city and come back to the Green to meet up with friends and comrades and have a friendly afternoon with all the family. May Day belongs to the people, and belongs on the Green, let's bring it back. Bring a picnic and food to share.
        We will be doing some banner and sign making at the Electron Club this Saturday 23rd, from 2:00 come along and help. Electron, CCA 350 Sauchiehall St, Glasgow G2 3JD

        If you can sing, dance, juggle, face-paint play an instrument, ride a mono-cycle, read a poem, or any other wee skill that might entertain the people, bring it along. There's Healthy Fun In Mud.

           The North Kelvin Meadow's struggle is still very much on, in spite of the last two rallies for support being hit by Scotland's unpredictable weather.  There was a call out for support on Saturday 16th. January, as luck would have it, that was the Saturday that we had the worst snowfall of the year. In spite of dreadful weather the rally was well supported, showing the strength of feeling in support for this struggle. The next rallying call went out for Tuesday January 26th., the day the cabal from the Kremlin in George Square were coming to cast their cash register eyes over the meadow, to see if it should become a tarmac property developers cash machine, or remain a wonderful community asset for the local community, and further afield. Again the Scottish weather hit them, that Tuesday it was torrential rain, but still the crowds came. The kids proved once and for all, that there is fun in mud, it was a tremendous turn out, proving that the Kelvin Meadow is not just a summer picnic place, but wonderful magical place where kids and adults alike can come together and enrich our communities. This must remain a slice of wonderful natural countryside in the midst of our city, a rich community asset, where our kids can learn and grow, in a healthy and fun atmosphere. Far from thinking of destroying this gem, our paid servants sitting in the Kremlin in George Square should be looking at ways to increase this sort of environment within our city.

Dave Douglass In Glasgow, On The Miners Strike.

       On the 24th. September, 2014, in Glasgow, to mark the 30 anniversary of the 1984/85 miners strike, Dave Douglass was invited to give a talk on that momentous class struggle. The event was co-sponsored by Clydeside IWW, Spirit of Revolt, Glasgow Anarchist Collective, Radical Independent Bookfair, and Glasgow Anarchist Federation. The event proved to be very interesting, informative, and well attended. For those who missed it, they can now see the event on video, thanks to Bob at City Strolls.

The Need For Direct Action And Mass Involvement.

      John Cooper, friend, comrade, life long activist, campaigner, speaks at the Maryhill Anti Cuts Conference, talks about early struggles in Castlemilk, which was at one time the largest housing scheme in Europe, which had absolutely no facilities, just houses and the only way to get a pint was join the Labour Party - Claimants Unions - School Closures.

Maryhill Anti Cuts Conference

      A group of residents in North west Glasgow have got together to fight the cuts and defend services locally. 

     The first event was an anti cuts conference which attracted 30 folks. There were talks from activists from many different spheres, from those locally who'd occupied a primary school a few years back, to NHS campaigners, to a speaker from the ongoing anti cuts student occupation at Glasgow University. Most importantly we had many small table discussions. 

      We are now having regular organising meetings and have begun mapping the area to get a clear picture of how the cuts will affect our local area and what we can do both to defend local services, but also fight all the cuts to public services and the welfare state.

Electron Club Open Day, Glasgow.

CCA is at 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow.

     The Electron club is a space at the CCA that is home to a whole variety of people and ideas. Started as a computer/electronics/artist Open Source software lab it soon expanded into many areas of cultural diversity and many have little to do with computers. You are just as likely to bump into a Wobblie as you are a computer hacker. If you are an artist, techie, nerd, or your bag is community activism or you are just interested in life, come and take a look. We are open to the public. Anyone can join. Its free.

OPEN STREET MAP DEMO
     There numerous mappers in and around Glasgow with a wealth of knowledge and from a variety backgrounds and ages. Come and ind out what mapping is about and start mapping the world.

GLASGOW SCIENCE FAIR
      Is about getting folk young and old interested in science. Come and play with their robot, Knex, Arduino and other science tech stuff. "Lego Mindstorms Challenge - Help explore how to programme Mindstorms robots to follow commands and navigate its way around our obstacle course. Bring Lego to life in this fun introduction to programming and robotics."

SPIRIT OF REVOLT
     The Spirit of Revolt is a group based in Glasgow who are attempting to collect as much material as possible from grass-roots campaigns in working class struggle, in and around the Glasgow/Clydeside area. An archival collection of working class history. Find out about this very important project for the city. We will be screening a film made at the SOR exhibition at the Mitchell library

COMMON GOOD AWARENESS PROJECT
      CGAP was set up to create awareness of Scotland's Common Good Fund, a whole bunch of assets, art galleries, schools, town halls, parks, that are publicly owned. Many of these assets have disappeared, have been lost or stolen over the years due to a lack of awareness that they even exist and maladministration by those whose duty is to protect the fund for the benefit of the public. Find out more and about the common good and the Farmhouse Trust, a Common Good project in Govan to create a independent resource centre whilst experiment with off grid technology eco building and gardening along the way.

GLASGOW TO DETROIT
     A second chance to see a shorter version of Glasgow to Detroit if you missed the Kinningpark screening. Here we will be discussing specific ideas from Detroit activists mentioned in the film to examine the situation in Glasgow/Scotland around growing.

INDUSTRIAL WORKERS OF THE WORLD
      Founded in 1905, the IWW is open to all workers. Don’t let the “industrial” part fool you. Our members include teachers, cleaners, social workers, retail workers, construction workers, bartenders, and computer programmers. Only bosses are not allowed to join.

THE CRISIS OF COMMUNITY and the Opportunity for Change, Sunday 17th 1:00pm.
       On the Sunday James Kelman, will lead a discussion geared towards mobilisation and solidarity in dealing with the issues across the city of the councils process of stopping DIY community activities in favour of. "You can have community things but we will do them for you with private partners". There has recently been a growing ground swell of ordinary people feeling the urge and the necessity to do something. Such as. Maryhill Park clean ups, despite council objections. Making Councillors accountable campaigns. Community run dinner nights at the Pearce Institute and places like Kinningpark Complex are creating activities and bringing groups together, presenting local people with a platform to voice their concerns and also their ideas. I mention a few but there are many others across the city. Some are known about but many are invisible to people as well as to each other.

THE GLASGOW RESHUFFLE.

Reshuffle Pearce Institute Govan

Sat. Sun. 16-17th June
        The idea of the Reshuffle is that the answers and skills to resolve most of the communities needs, desires and problems, lies within the community itself. “We only need to ‘reshuffle’ our priorities to learn where the answers lie”.
      The question we are asking this year is. What would you reshuffle given the chance? Our big "R" is going to be going round the community engaging people in the questions. Looking at our community infrastructure. How can we motivate ourselves and others to think more about taking part in things, finding out what is going on and coming up with solutions to solving our own problems.
      We could also maybe look at the possibilities around us. What do we already have. How could it be improved on. What skills do we have to offer and what do we want to learn. How do we make our community and things in it visible to more people. After we collect some ideas and things we have a shared interest in we will look at places where we can gather to talk about these things. Using our community facilities and institutions, gardens centre's, libraries and local resources.
       We will of course need to make this work interesting, creative, educational and use a whole variety of media to explore ideas. We will also need to socialise the work, make it fun if the task is boring. We will also need to think about how to engage different age groups from
kids to older folk in working together.
       But that's for later. First we must identify some issues, trains of thought, germinating ideas to get us going. We would like to bring the big R to where you R and get started on discussing a few ideas, make recordings and film things.
