Glasgow May Day 2019.

May Day is fast approaching and for the fourth year, the May Day Organising Group have organised a series of events round the theme of May Day. This year it is a mixture of fascinating, informative, exciting and fun events.
It kicks off with Wednesday, May 1st, gather at the Cenotaph George Square, 11:45am and a colourful noisy march to the Donald Dewar statue in Buchanan Street, where there will be a rally with musicians, singers, poets, stalls and an open mic. Thursday 6:00pm,  May 2nd. a history tour, a leisurely walk around the city, stopping at points of interest in working class history, ending up at The Green. Saturday, May 4th. 2:00pm a film show, Salt of the Earth, in the Quakers Hall at Charing Cross. The culmination of this May Day celebration will be our now regular Picnic on The Green, Sunday May 5th.. Again there will be performers food to share and lots of fun. We are still looking for more performers to come forward and take a wee slot at these events, singers, dancers, jugglers, musicians, poets, etc. so if you think you can fill a slot please get in touch. So do come along to any or all of these events and let's get May Day back to what it should be, a celebration of ordinary people, celebrating their struggles and victories, a fun day for all the family. We have to rescue May Day from the dead hands of the sanitised version we have at the moment, a sedate march through the city and then listening to our political ballerinas spouting how they will lead us to the promised land.

International Women's Day Glasgow Event.

An International Women's Day event, initiated by the Equality Officers of the Clydeside Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World, will be held on Thursday, the 8th of March.
The rally and Walk of Pride will assemble at 4.30 pm at the La Pasionaria statue located on the north bank of the River Clyde next to Glasgow Bridge, opposite the Custom House on Clyde Street.
This site was chosen because of the prominent role Dolores Ibarruri, called La Pasionaria ('The Passionate Flower') played in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, in defense of the Spanish Republic; and because the statue of her by sculptor Arthur Dooley so beautifully represents the revolutionary woman of courage that she was-- and that many of us strive to be.
The rally will also honour the Scottish revolutionary, Ethel MacDonald, who was a key figure in the Scottish anarchist movement and in the Spanish Civil War. In 1936 she was sent by the United Socialist Movement to Barcelona where she became world-renowned as the English-speaking reporter for an anarchist radio station. She also remained an activist, daringly organising hunger strikes among the political prisoners, smuggling in letters, and helping some escape .
The rally will feature a banner that says Celebrate International Women's Day For a World Free from Capitalism and Patriarchy, singing, and an open mic.
At 5.30 pm we will start our Walk of Pride, with banner and placards, to George Square where we will join up with the Scottish Irish Abortion Rights campaigners for a #Solidarity4Repeal demo at 6 pm-- thus linking it to one of the most critical issues of the day: access to abortion as a woman's right. Throughout the afternoon, we will be proudly expressing our belief that Sisterhood, and Comradeship, are Powerful!
All are welcome to attend. Please spread the word.

Revolt In Songs.

The winter solstice is approaching and Spirit of Revolt have organised an evening of song, music, poetry and general merry making, to take place on December 20th 2017. By coming along you will have a night to remember, meet like minded people, make new friends, and at the same time be helping to support the Spirit of Revolt Archive. To continue to expand this excellent resource, please come along and enjoy yourself while lending support to all the volunteers who make Spirit of Revolt what it is, a unique and living record of your history, with no connection to political parties or trade unions, an independent grass-roots history.
