Liberation.

We live in hard times, poverty is increasing, more and more children go hungry, food banks are multiplying, destitution multiples, basic food is galloping out of reach of many, but hard times should be fertile soil for anarchists. It is so much easier to point to the anomalies and inequality of the system and should be obvious to most people. However, that is not always enough to rouse the people to anger and direct action. So what should anarchists do, perhaps Errico Malatesta points us in the right direction.

Quote from Great Anarchists by Dog Section Press, chapter on Malatesta.

"The important thing is not the victory of our plans, our projects, our utopias, which in any case need the confirmation of experience and can be --- developed and adapted to the real moral and material conditions of the age and place. What matters most is that the people--- lose their sheeplike instincts and habits which thousands of years of slavery have instilled in them, and learn to think and act freely. And it is to this great work of moral liberation that the anarchist must specifically dedicate themselves."

No mean task but sounds like excellent advice.

Towards Anarchism.

With the pandemic tapering off and austerity and unemployment facing the ordinary people, people will no doubt be looking for solutions to this onslaught of poverty. So we at Spirit of Revolt, thought that this month’s “Read of the Month” should perhaps point to one solution that is a possibility of solving our problems. It is another pamphlet from Errico Malatesta, "Towards Anarchism", from our John Cooper Collection, T/SOR-3-52-97.
Have a read and perhaps delve into the multitude of pamphlets, booklets posters and other anarchist/libertarian socialist material we have on line, look, learn and act.

Malatesta.

Covid19 has still got Spirit of Revolt members locked out of their room at the Mitchell Library, but there is still a few things we can do to keep you coming back for another wee look and to encourage you to delve into your own history. So this month Spirit of Revolt has picked a small pamphlet entitled Selected Writings by Errico Malatesta, for their “Read of the Month. Errico Malatesta was an Italian anarchist and revolutionary socialist. Though Italian, he spent much of his life exiled from Italy and over his life time he spent more than ten years in various prisons. As well as being active in the struggle for anarchism, he also wrote and edited a number of radical newspapers and was a friend of Mikhail Bakunin. Born 14 December 1853, he died 22 July 1932.
