A Library?

Where is Glasgow's anarchist library, we have Glasgow Women's Library, we have Spirit of Revolt Archives of Dissent, but no Glasgow Anarchist Library. We are a big city with a history of radical struggle by the ordinary people. Perhaps a Glasgow Anarchist Library could be the missing link.

 From stuut.info
October 8, 2023

We are several people who set up a participatory anarchist public library in the center of Brussels because we thought it was important. It’s called La B.O.U.M. , and after many months of preparation, it’s the day of the inauguration : we are happy to celebrate, and to finally start borrowing!

It’s happening at Boom, a self-managed café on rue Pletinckx n°7 in 1000 Brussels, behind the Halles St-Géry.

Saturday, October 21, 2023 4:00-10:00 p.m.

Program :
-4 p.m. : workshops, games
-6 p.m. : presentation of the library
-7 p.m. : Spanish inn
-8:30 p.m. : concert
+ surprise

Spirit of Revolt is entirely run by a small group of unpaid volunteers and we welcome volunteers who can give an hour or two a week to help out and at the same time learn about archiving. So if you are interested in archives and history from below and have those couple of hours spare, why not get in touch, contact us HERE or contact us through info@spiritofrevolt.info

One of our aims, beside collecting and preserving our history is to make it freely and easily accessible to all. To this aim we digitise as much as possible and make it freely available on our website https://spiritofrevolt.info We also produce a "Read of the Month" here on this blog and on our website. You can also read selections from our collections on our twitter account, https://twitter.com/RevoltArchives

We rely entirely on donations from comrades, friends and associates, and are not supported financially by trade unions, or businesses. So if you like what we are doing and think it is worth while doing, why not support us by the price of a pint our a couple of coffees a month. On off or monthly direct debit no matter how small would be very much appreciated. DONATE HERE.

READ ON LINE.

Spirit of Revolt is probably the largest anarchist/libertarian Socialist archive in Scotland, and it is free to use. It is run by a small team of unpaid dedicated volunteers, but it does require money to function in this capitalist system. Wifi, website maintenance costs, annual fees for domain, name paper and ink cartridges and other ancillary costs etc. We receive no grants and rely on the generosity of our friends, comrades and supporters. So if you think we are doing a worth while job and would like to see it grow, why not donate the price of a couple of cups of coffee a month, so that we can continue to gather and catalogue and make easy accessible more of the struggle and history of the ordinary people.

SOR.

Spirit of Revolt Archive is a treasure trove of anarchist and libertarian socialist history from Glasgow and Clydeside area and some from further afield. It is 11 years old and is run by a small dedicate band of unpaid volunteers. We receive no funding from unions, companies or political parties, but sadly we still live in a capitalist world and there are costs involved. We rely solely on the financial support from friends supporters and comrades. We work hard at getting as much material up on line and free to access. If you think we are doing a worthwhile job and would like to see the archive grow and carry on collecting, storing and digitising our history, then perhaps you could think of donating the price of a couple of coffees a month, any donation no matter how little is most appreciated, direct debits gives us a guarantee to plan and develop into the future. History.

For the May “Read of the Month”  Spirit of Revolt brings up another wee gem from the past, by J. Britz. A small pamphlet, Crisis in the Communist Party. This is from our Les Foster Collection, T/SOR/36/23/13, well worth a read. Of course one of the reasons we do this “Read of the  Month” is not just to bring you these priceless pieces from the past, but to encourage you to browse through the anarchist and libertarian socialist history of Glasgow and Clydeside. A rich well of the struggles of the ordinary people for that better world for all. We can always lean from our history, and it is essential that we record and make easily available that history. I think it was George Orwell that said, I paraphrase here, “The best we to destroy a people is to destroy their history”. So delve, enjoy, learn, spread the word.

Our History.

Our history is usually a hidden history as this present economic system has no place for those who wish to change the status quo. All the more reason we must record and preserve our history, and make it easily accessible to all. The history of anarchism is the long and difficult struggle of people for justice and freedom, without our recorded history, we were never there, our struggles become invisible. It is also a text book for the next generation to learn from and advance that undying human desire for a just and fair world of freedom for all, for an end to exploitation and authority over others.

The following from The Trans Metropolitan Review:

We are pleased to belatedly announce the publication of Secolo Nuovo; or, The Times of Promise, published by Detritus Books out of Olympia, Washington. This work of anarchist fiction and history took over a decade to complete and was shaped by many hands, including our own. We wish to congratulate the researchers, archivists, historians, publishers, and thankless scribes who made this book a reality.
To honor the contents of the book, including that which escaped its pages, we are happy to release our latest film, L’epoca D’oro (or, the Golden Age), a chronicle of rebellion from the 1880s to the 1910s. Included in the film are Cree warriors fighting the Canadian state, Apache warriors fighting the Mexican and US state, anarchists fighting every state on earth, and an eccentric inventor named Nikola Tesla who is determined to create a planetary system of free, clean energy. All of these events are touched on in Secolo Nuovo, and our film can be seen as a companion to the book, enlarging its scope both geographically and mentally.
Also included is a review of Secolo Nuovo by Marieke Bivar, recently printed in The Fifth Estate, the longest running anarchist newspaper in the US.

As always, we hope these works can aid you in your current struggles, whatever they may be.

Long Live Anarchy!
