History.

The collecting, preserving and making easily available anarchist history is a very important part of our movement. Our history gives us validity, it ties us to the real world of our ongoing daily struggles for justice and freedom. Without that history anarchism would have to be reborn day by day. I think it was Orwell who stated, and I paraphrase here, "the best way to destroy a people is to destroy their history". Without our history we were never there. That's why such sites as Spirit of Revolt, Tyneside Anarchist Archive and Sparrows Nest and others dotted around the world, are of extreme importance. So it is great to see another such site taking shape, let's give it support, after all it is part of our story.
From activistjourneys.wordpress.com
Below is a series of interviews, recorded for a documentary, never finished by it’s original producers, which hoped to show anarchism in all it’s forms around the world today and in history. But, I think it succeeds even better at that task as a video catalogue for those interested enough to find the clips that peak their curiousity.
The playlists were already on kollectiva.media, so feel free to share that link with friends. I just wanted to create this article and put them on youtube to make them easier to find and more accessible to researchers.
Finally, this will be part of a series of posts where I try to help add to other people’s projects, and ideally get volunteers involved in a rare anarchist media archiving project. The next task will be making playlists out of a bunch of rare anarchist documentaries which Stuart Christie collected on his website over many years. A lot of them are to do with the Spanish Civil War. So, if you like that idea or want to lend a hand, check out the spreadsheet, maybe share my tweet asking for help &/or contact me.

Click the ‘see more’ buttons to be directed to each playlist of clips on youtube. And you can scroll to the bottom if you’d just like to see a shorter text table of all the information.

The Green.

May Day on The Green 1913.

Back in the old days away long before masks and lockdowns had been thought of, come the Glasgow Fair, the last fortnight in July, the good people of Glasgow would make their way to the Glasgow Green. During that two week period there would be a lot going on, on The Green, there would be a fair ground and lots to activities to keep you interested. It's all gone, However, a small band of Glasgow Green lovers will be putting on a wee show to mark the Glasgow Fair on the Green.

A wee bit of history of Glasgow Green courtesy of Spirit of Revolt

Wet Sma' Shot.

Well Paisley's Sma' Shot Day passed without its bands, drums banner, flags, march and burning of the "Cork", as I stated in a previous post, the town fathers had decided to cancel it, well, they didn't say that in words, but did in deeds. The said it would be an online affair, which just means that it was cancelled. How do crowds march through the streets with banners, music and noise, end up in a flat bit of town and carry out the annual ceremony of burning the "Cork", while sitting at home looking at a screen?
However this working class struggle and victory was marked on the street in Paisley by a small group of die-hard working class warriors. The "Cork" turned up, with his ill gotten money sticking out of his hat, pockets and sleeves, but wasn't burnt on this occasion, literature was handed out, but the weather decided not to be on their side and it poured buckets. Undeterred the event went ahead, the stall, the "Cork" and leaflets, explaining about the Sma' Shot Day and the Radical Paisley got distributed. If you missed the event, enjoy the photos.

Sma' Shot Day.

Sma' Shot Day a traditional workers celebration held annually in Paisley, according to the powers that be, will be a virtual event this year, that's the same as saying it will be cancelled, but you can watch pictures of past events on your screen. But fear not, a small group of die-hard supporters of working class traditions will be holding a small event to mark this memorable day in working class struggle. The Glasgow Keelie will have a stall where you can come and meet the "Cork", he is usually burnt at the annual celebration. Sadly he will not be burnt this year, so come along a tell him what you think of profit grabbing greedy bosses, pick up a free copy of Radical Paisley, Glasgow Keelie and other free literature, chat with the stall members, and keep alive this important day of workers celebration of victory.

Authority.

Well more than a year and we at Spirit of Revolt, thanks to Covid19, are still unable to gain access to our working room at the Mitchell Library. We can and do try to keep things moving as best we can, one of those things we can still do is to keep giving you our "Read of the Month". A little snapshot of what we have in our archive and on our website, https://spiritofrevolt.info
This month it is a little known publication called Authority, issue No.2 from 1979. Have a read and perhaps it will tempt you to delve ever deeper into what we have in our archive. There is a lot to read, enjoy and learn from our comrades from the past.

Anarchy.

Because of the restrictions due to the pandemic we at Spirit of Revolt are still locked out of our room, but still try to keep things moving best we can, Read of the Month is something that we can still do, to bring you little samples of our extensive collection of anarchist/libertarian-socialist history, memorabilia and literature. So for the month of May’s “Read of the Month” we have chosen a publication from our Bratach Dubh Collection, “Anarchy a Journal of Desire Armed” No.9, an anarchist publication with a long history. Spirit of Revolt has a considerable number of issues of this publication, but are always eager to take additional issues in the hope of some day having a complete range. So have a look at what we have and if you have an issue or two that could fill some gaps and are willing to send them, please get in touch through our contact page.

Enjoy:

Libertarian.

We are still locked out of our archive because of this covid19 beast, though things are looking brighter. However we at Spirit of Revolt still manage to keep things moving, as best we can under the circumstances. One thing we can still do is bring you our monthly gem in the form of our "Read of the Month".

For this month's “Read of the Month”, April, we have chosen a small booklet from our John Cooper Collection, “Libertarian Communist Review”, from away back in 1974. Though written back then, it is still as relevant today as the day it was written, so is well worth a wee read. While on our website, why not browse the many artefacts, leaflets, booklets, posters and thousands of other parts of our anarchist/libertarian socialist history. It is a wealth of information all relevant to today’s struggles for that better world for all.
