A Loss.

Sad News from Edinburgh. We must always remember and honour our own, we owe them, there contribution was not for themselves, but for us all.

We remember Ross
October 3, 2021admin5

Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty and the Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh would like to pay tribute to Ross who died suddenly and unexpectedly on 2nd September 2021 following a hospital operation. We are very shocked and saddened by Ross’ passing.
Over many years Ross worked tirelessly and selflessly in ACE and ECAP to further the struggle for social justice. His contributions were many. He did a huge amount of work in cataloguing, digitising and physically organising the Scottish Radical Library and the Autonomous Archive, both based at the ACE premises. He was the soul of both, and his spirit and legacy will live on in future SRL activities.
Some of us first met Ross at solidarity demonstrations in Dundee and elsewhere organised through the Scotland-wide Action Against Austerity network, Ross showing his commitment by travelling himself from Fife to attend the demos. We then got to know him and he became deeply involved in ACE and ECAP.
In recent years Ross was the principal person looking after the ECAP and ACE websites. This included liasing with providers, posting articles, developing the sites and much more. Ross was also one of the main activists involved in ECAP and ACE social media, posting many articles and conscientiously replying to messages and queries.
Ross set up the current ACE email, and monitored the messages, making sure that emails were responded to and that the ACE working group was informed of new communications. He equally did much invaluable work on the ECAP email.
Before the pandemic Ross would often journey through from his home in Fife to Edinburgh to staff and work in the ACE premises, including spending hours in the ACE “tunnel” organising the archive.
Ross was a dear comrade for us, but probably you met him too in reading our social media posts or in receiving a reply from us about ECAP, ACE or the SRL. Please keep him in your thoughts as a wonderful comrade, activist and person who never sought the limelight or to promote himself but rather made an enormous contribution, without claiming any credit for it. He was completely committed to the cause. He was always very calm, great to work with and a good friend. We will always remember him.

ACE.

For many years now ACE in Edinburgh has been a hub of struggle against this repressive exploitative system, it has been the centre of support for all those at the receiving end of the state's vindictiveness from the marginalised to immigrants, a centre of friendship, learning and support. Sadly like all these hubs they are subject to the vagaries of the capitalist system, so after years there paying their rent the owner has decided to sell the property to a developer. So now they have to move and find a new home, in Edinburgh that's not easy, nor is it cheap so there is an appeal to help save this vital centre and continue their great work in support and activism.

NEWS FROM THE AUTONOMOUS CENTRE OF EDINBURGH

ACE FUND-RAISING APPEAL

Thanks very much to all who have contributed so far, we have received a good number of donations. However ACE still needs more financial support to be able to move to new premises as our enquiries have shown that the going rate for rent for similar premises is at least double our current rent. We need to find a new building soon as the owners are moving forward with steps to sell our premises at 17 West Montgomery Place. Help save ACE!

Please go to the fund-raising appeal page at https://autonomous.org.uk/2021/05/31/urgent-appeal/

Precariat Office Scotland write:
We have launched a campaign to encourage people to vote for us for a project called Emergency One stop shop.
Emergency ‘One Stop Shop’: COVID-19 is causing unprecedented hardship. We serve migrants (mostly from Western Europe, but we welcome everyone) who often work in hard-hit hospitality and tourism, and don’t have any family/social support network locally. Our weekly ‘shop’ will help prevent people falling below the poverty line. It will include resources bank, soup kitchen, information and legal/welfare advice in the person’s own language. Also access to free online English classes (improve job opportunities) and yoga/self-defence classes (health and wellbeing).
We are a volunteer run organisation and the grant money would be spent on resources for the bank, equipment and ingredients (for soup), sessional workers (to run classes). Outcomes will be reducing isolation and improving people’s lives during this crisis.
If you live, work, volunteer, study in Leith (and are over 8 years old) please VOTE!
From 25 Jan till 31 January, vote for PIE Scotland at bit.ly/LeithChooses2021. Help us support people like you with free meals, English lessons, legal advice and self-defence classes in Leith. #VoteAndGetIt

Followed by talk and discussion on Detroit:
DETROIT: FUTURE CITY?
8pm Monday 12th December
At Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh.
Join us for a talk and discussion on Detroit: Future City?
The US city of Detroit had a population in the region of 1.8 million in the 1950s but automation and the flight of big business, particularly in the automotive industry, led to massive redundancies, foreclosures and the displacement of millions. The population now stands at less than 700,000, the lowest it has been for a century. In the midst of this neo-liberal catastrophe and the associated withdrawal of public services, residents have banded together to create their own solutions including food networks, community safety patrols, free schools and neighbourhood housing projects. However, these pioneering Detroiters are faced with an onslaught of further privatisation, dissolution of democratic control of local government, the removal collective bargaining and raids on pension funds. These competing models of the 'future city' will have ramifications not just in the US but worldwide. Sarah Coffey, a longtime Detroit resident, community organiser and a co-founder of the Midnight Special Law Collective has been closely involved with autonomous communities in the city.

THE BLACK PANTHERS IN LONDON
Talk and discussion at ACE with Carlus Hudson
Saturday 17 December 7pm
The Black Panthers are one of the most pivotal organisations in the histories of radicalism and anti-racism in the United States, and their ideas have had an enormous impact on activists who have come after them. Far less famous, but by no means less significant, was the Black Panther Movement in Britain. Active in the late 60s and early 70s, its history touches on the fight within the anti-racist movement in Britain between its liberal and radical wings, and the internationalisation of struggles against colonialism, neo-colonialism and the Vietnam War. Focusing on the Black Panthers based in London, this talk will tell their story before delving deeper into the development of the movement’s culture and organisational models. The talk will examine the Black Panthers from the perspective of intersectional anarchism, and show its shortcomings in terms of gender, class, and political hierarchy. Carlus Hudson is a PhD student at the University of Portsmouth researching student anti-racism in the UK in the 1970s'

Remove All Traces Of Racist Scum From Our Streets.

Since the "Brexit" vote we have seen an increase in racist posters and stickers appear in our towns and cities. It's good to see that the good people of Edinburgh and Leith are organising to do something about this. We should never allow the racist scum the publicity they crave, their stickers and posters should be removed as quickly as they appear. Perhaps other towns, cities, villages  and communities will follow the example of Edinburgh and Leith. More steam to their elbow.

UNITED COLOURS OF LEITH – MARCH – SAT 30 JULY
Meeting 2pm Pilrig Park and marching to Leith Links, ”We love Leith. But we hate any kind of discrimination. It's diversity that makes Leith so colourful and special. We have to make sure it stays that way. This time we need to clean the streets of hate-filled messages, not litter. Just a few days after the #Brexit vote, some neo-nazi stickers have appeared around Leith. We need to nip this in the bud now. Our idea is to have a United Colours Of Leith demonstration to show the people who put up those stickers that we won't put up with them. We'd like you to join us and invite all your friends and family too.”

ACE and its associated groups totally support this march and we hope to see you there!

ACE In Edinburgh This Weekend.

Events this weekend in Edinburgh from the ACE list:
EVENTS THIS FRIDAY 5TH AND SATURDAY 6TH FEBRUARY

Ditching the Fear - The Logistics Workers' Movement in Italy (and Beyond)
Film Screening and Debate
Friday 5th February, 5.30pm, Hunter Lecture Theatre, Hunter Building,
Edinburgh College of Art, 74 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, EH3 9DF

Since the financial crisis in 2008, states, companies, and politicians have increasingly undermined workers’ and union rights all over Europe and beyond. However, unusual events have occurred in the Southern Europe countries most hit by European Austerity policies. We see low-wage workers developing new forms of effective and lively resistance. The documentary "Ditching the fear" follows the struggles and actions taken by precarious migrant workers in Italian warehouses and logistics companies. Over 10 days, the embedded film team discusses, fights, and documents what can be understood as the forefront of a new workers' movement. With the help and experience of the grassroots union SI-COBAS the migrant workers are effectively organising against their isolation and degrading working conditions, displaying solidarity that is changing their work and lives.
The documentary (80mins) is in Italian with English subtitles. It has been produced by the team at labournet.tv. The film will be followed by a discussion, and a member of the film team will be present. The discussion will include the participation of activists groups and researchers involved with warehouses and retail sector struggles in the UK as well as in Scotland. In particular the collective Angry Workers of the World, from London, will introduce their ongoing worker inquiry and organizing in South London Warehouses including their writings on Amazon workplace conditions. Kendra Briken - University of Strathclyde, will also comment on her ongoing research on Amazon Scotland workers.
Organised by Counterinfo Lab, Plan C and ACE

WHOSE STREETS? OUR STREETS! PROTEST MEET-UP OF SUPPORTERS OF RAPE ADVOCATE ROOSH V

Meet at the Covenanters Memorial, Grassmarket, Edinburgh this Saturday
6th February 8pm
https://www.facebook.com/events/1518740001754085/
Update 4th February – Organisers Edinburgh University Feminist Society have announced that though Roosh V claims to have cancelled his obnoxious events, the protest is still definitely going ahead. For latest news see above link.

The Feminist Society write:
We were horrified to discover that on Saturday Roosh V has arranged for his supporters in Edinburgh to meet up and spread his misogynistic, hateful and incredibly dangerous 'pick-up tips'. This advocate of rape has said that only straight men are allowed to attend his event and protesters will be filmed (so you may wish to cover your face so you cant be identified)
But that's not going to stop us. We will not sit by and let this disgusting behaviour scare us off our streets. We're going to stand up and show that sexism, misogyny and most definitely rape are NEVER tolerated.
They're meeting in the Grassmarket so join us there for a rally because this man's hate has to go! FemSoc committee will be meeting at 7:30 at Teviot and walking down together so feel free to join us if you don't want to walk down alone!
*if you're a man or feminist ally then this is your time to shine. For very understandable reasons some women may not feel comfortable coming so we need all of your support. There's no pressure for anyone to attend if you don't feel comfortable*
You can read more about him here:
http://www.thenational.scot/news/militant-pro-rape-pick-up-artist-organises-events-in-scotland-where-female-gate-crashers-risk-furious-retribution.13146

NOTE: The article includes the following information: "In an article from last February, Valizadeh (Roosh's real name) advocated making rape legal on private property. His rationale was that a women who consented to go into a man’s house, had consented to sex. "
