Our Kate.

          As usual the people at Kate Sharpley Library do a magnificent job in preserving and making available anarchist info and history, we at Spirit of Revolt, Archives of Dissent, take our hats off to them, as I'm sure lots of others will do likewise.  This latest bulletin is no exception, packed full of interesting info. Take a wee look.

2020

          Quite a lot has gone up on the website (and gone on in the world) since our last KSL Bulletin in September. We are not even thinking of trying to sum up our year. But we send you our good wishes and some anarchist history you might have missed.

Stuart Christie 1946-2020

Four months on, we’re still coming to terms with the fact it’s no good thinking ‘I must ask Stuart…’ John Barker, his friend and fellow defendant in the Stoke Newington Eight trial, has written a tribute: ‘I couldn’t stomach Bakunin and he Marx but when it came to the politics of the prison we acted as one. And something else, the great thing about Stuart as comrade and friend is that he was always cheerful and ready to make things both happen, and to work. […] With Stuart there was never any need to say, Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down.’

Thoughts on Francesco Ghezzi
Francesco Ghezzi was an anarchist militant from Milan who was also active in France, Switzerland, Germany and Russia (and was imprisoned in the last three countries)…

Spirit of Revolt, More Digitised Collections.

      The volunteers at Spirit of Revolt are as always busy trying to bring the people to the archive, and bring our history to the people. We are delighted to state that two more of our collections have been fully digitised and therefore you can now read them from the comfort of your home, library, cafe, etc. No need to make you way into the Mitchell Library to do so. Though you will always be made welcome should you wish to visit us at the Mitchell.

Spirit of Revolt's Workers City.

       Spirit of Revolt's latest Show and Tell FREE event is, from the feed back, looking like a very popular event. The line up of speakers is a roll-call of some of Glasgow's well known names, most of whom were involved in that wonderful event from the 1990's, Workers City, which was a counter organisation to Glasgow's European City of Culture. It highlighted that other culture, that of the ordinary people of the city and further afield.

     A lot has changed in our city since 1990, so this is a not-to-be-missed, event to remember the past, but also to see and assess where we are in today's culture of the ordinary people of our city.

     Approximately two weeks to go, so mark your diaries, tie a knot in your fingers, so as not to forget, keep that slot free, so that you can learn about the enthusiastic and radical thoughts and actions of that time, enjoy the open discussion, add your piece and take part as you please. See you there.

Learning From The Past.

 

        At Spirit of Revolt, we are always trying to bring the history of the people's struggles to a wider audience, we select pamphlets and articles from our archive and put them up in our "Read Of The Month" for all to enjoy and perhaps learn from. This month we have chosen and small booklet, which is part of The John Cooper Collection, published by Cienfuegos Press and edited by that well know anarchist Albert Meltzer, The International Revolutionary Solidarity Movement, "A study of the Origins and Development of the Revolutionary Anarchist Movement in Europe, 1945 – 1973, with particular reference to the First of May Group."

Happy Birthday.

 

        This month marks the 6th anniversary of the birth of Spirit of Revolt Archive. August 2011 a small group of dedicated activists sat down in a café in Glasgow and put in place their ideas to preserve the history of the struggles of the ordinary people in their city and Clydeside area. From that small band with their ideas, has grown what I believe to be a unique archive of considerable scope and breadth. It was not just a desire to record and preserve this valuable history, but to make it all easily accessible to the public at large. This requires a small army of dedicated volunteers to sit and scan thousands of documents to make them available on our website, so you don't have to make your way to a library in Glasgow to read them, but can do it from the comfort of your home. Have a look at our collection, read rare documents from the past and not so distant past, learn about the struggles of your parents, grand parents and actions you may have been involved in yourself. It is a living history, still being created by you, your friends and neighbours.

       Browse our catalogue, transport your self in to the struggles of ordinary people as they strive for that better life for all. I believe it was George Orwell who said, and I paraphrase, "the best way to destroy a people is to destroy their history". Without a record of our history we become a people without a history or a culture. We must never let that happen, we have a very rich history, of which we can be very proud, our history is our culture, it's who we are. Our archive strives to make sure our history is preserved, recorded and made readily available for all. 

       All this requires time and volunteers, but sadly it also requires money, and it is always a struggle to keep ahead of the financial demands the capitalist system makes on us. We believe what we do is not only valuable, but necessary, if you also feel this way, perhaps you can see you way to helping with a small donation, one of or, a monthly direct debit, no amount is too small. Glasgow Peoples Press.

 

    Over the years, anarchists and libertarian socialists have produced a mountain of zines, newspapers, serials, etc. and those in Glasgow are no exception. The vibrant people of our city have added more than their fair share to that legacy of literature, detailing the struggles, anger, dreams and hopes of the ordinary people. We at Spirit of Revolt are very proud to have collected a considerable number of these publications and are working hard to make them available on line, so that those involved in struggle today, can learn from the past, and grasp the fact that their struggle is not a new struggle, but the same struggle as previous generations.

         The latest paper to be digitalised by Spirit of Revolt, and made available for you to read on line is one that, though there were not a tremendous number of issues, 11, in fact, it was popular and influential, namely Glasgow Peoples Press. All 11 issues are held in our archive and are there for you to read on line, see T-SOR 3-56-6 John Cooper Collection. The latest addition to our Read of the Month gives a short summary of this paper, highlighting issue No.6. Have a look, we know you will find it all very interesting and we hope helpful in your struggles.

       I'm sure there are a lot of anarchists/libertarian socialists etc. out there and they may have a bob or two in their pockets, if so, and you like what we are doing, remember, it's your history, perhaps you could make your way to the Contribute page.
