Ideas!

I've just received the new book "Between Thought and Expression Lies a Lifetime, Why Ideas Matter" by Noam Chomsky and James Kelman, PM Press ISBN: 978-1-6296-3880-5. Described by one reviewer as Brilliant, Incisive, Fearless. A quick lick through it and it looks both informative and interesting, but like all books written for and by the radical left, it shouldn't be taken as some sort of sacred gospel. It is the considered opinion of those involved drawn from personal experience, thoughts, discussions and readings and should always be seen a such. No matter the differences you may have, I'm sure you will find something new, interesting and even controversial, but you will come away with some new thoughts and insights, what more can you ask of a book.

I should add that all the proceeds from the Scottish end of this production will go to support, the Spirit of Revolt Archive. We at Spirit of Revolt are extremely grateful for the authors' support and generosity. You can also help support Spirit of Revolt by purchasing the book and spreading this info far and wide.

Research.

December seems to be a month when everybody gives everybody a gift, so we at Spirit of Revolt thought we would join in this custom. So for December, as our gift, we are giving you a second “Read of the Month”. We have chosen as our gift a bulletin from September 1989, Bulletin of Anarchist Research, No.18. Enjoy and perhaps learn and feel driven to delve into our wonderful Pandora’s Box of anarchist history, photos, memorabilia and much more.

Another month and another Spirit of Revolt offering of “Read of the Month”. For December we have chosen a serial well know in anarchist circles, but there are still those who may not have read the older issues. So here is Anarchy, A Journal of Desire Armed, Volume 14, No. 2, spring/summer, 1994.

Leaflets.

This month for our “Read of the Month”, Spirit of Revolt, instead of a pamphlet booklet or serial, we have chosen a bundle of leaflets, all with interesting information or comments, most still as relevant today as they were the day they were produced. Put together they make for some very interesting reading and some great ideas.

History.

The collecting, preserving and making easily available anarchist history is a very important part of our movement. Our history gives us validity, it ties us to the real world of our ongoing daily struggles for justice and freedom. Without that history anarchism would have to be reborn day by day. I think it was Orwell who stated, and I paraphrase here, "the best way to destroy a people is to destroy their history". Without our history we were never there. That's why such sites as Spirit of Revolt, Tyneside Anarchist Archive and Sparrows Nest and others dotted around the world, are of extreme importance. So it is great to see another such site taking shape, let's give it support, after all it is part of our story.
From activistjourneys.wordpress.com
Below is a series of interviews, recorded for a documentary, never finished by it’s original producers, which hoped to show anarchism in all it’s forms around the world today and in history. But, I think it succeeds even better at that task as a video catalogue for those interested enough to find the clips that peak their curiousity.
The playlists were already on kollectiva.media, so feel free to share that link with friends. I just wanted to create this article and put them on youtube to make them easier to find and more accessible to researchers.
Finally, this will be part of a series of posts where I try to help add to other people’s projects, and ideally get volunteers involved in a rare anarchist media archiving project. The next task will be making playlists out of a bunch of rare anarchist documentaries which Stuart Christie collected on his website over many years. A lot of them are to do with the Spanish Civil War. So, if you like that idea or want to lend a hand, check out the spreadsheet, maybe share my tweet asking for help &/or contact me.
Playlist Previews

Click the ‘see more’ buttons to be directed to each playlist of clips on youtube. And you can scroll to the bottom if you’d just like to see a shorter text table of all the information.

Scorcher.

Another month and another “Read of the Month” from Spirit of Revolt. The Scorcher, this little pamphlet unfortunately doesn’t seem to be dated, but it wasn’t yesterday that it was printed, probably around the early 1980’s. Have a read, then take a browse through the Spirit of Revolt Archive, you’ll be surprised at the variety and breadth of the material housed there.

Lords.

For July’s “Read of the Month” we at Spirit of Revolt have chosen a little pamphlet called "Lords of the Realm" it has a look at those who own most of the planet and most of the wealth produced by the planet’s population. A very unsatisfactory situation for most people on the planet. Perhaps reading it may increase your desire to change the equation in favour of the people who actually create all that wealth, the ordinary person on the street. Enjoy.
Read online:

Some interesting info on the situation of the world's wealth.

The wealthiest 1 percent of the world’s population now owns more than half of the world’s wealth, according to a new report.
The total wealth in the world grew by 6 percent over the past 12 months to $280 trillion, marking the fastest wealth creation since 2012, according to the Credit Suisse report. More than half of the $16.7 trillion in new wealth was in the U.S., which grew $8.5 trillion richer.
But that wealth around the world is increasingly concentrated among those at the top. The top 1 percent now owns 50.1 percent of the world’s wealth, up from 45.5 percent in 2001.

Anarchy.

Because of the restrictions due to the pandemic we at Spirit of Revolt are still locked out of our room, but still try to keep things moving best we can, Read of the Month is something that we can still do, to bring you little samples of our extensive collection of anarchist/libertarian-socialist history, memorabilia and literature. So for the month of May’s “Read of the Month” we have chosen a publication from our Bratach Dubh Collection, “Anarchy a Journal of Desire Armed” No.9, an anarchist publication with a long history. Spirit of Revolt has a considerable number of issues of this publication, but are always eager to take additional issues in the hope of some day having a complete range. So have a look at what we have and if you have an issue or two that could fill some gaps and are willing to send them, please get in touch through our contact page.

Enjoy:

Libertarian.

We are still locked out of our archive because of this covid19 beast, though things are looking brighter. However we at Spirit of Revolt still manage to keep things moving, as best we can under the circumstances. One thing we can still do is bring you our monthly gem in the form of our "Read of the Month".

For this month's “Read of the Month”, April, we have chosen a small booklet from our John Cooper Collection, “Libertarian Communist Review”, from away back in 1974. Though written back then, it is still as relevant today as the day it was written, so is well worth a wee read. While on our website, why not browse the many artefacts, leaflets, booklets, posters and thousands of other parts of our anarchist/libertarian socialist history. It is a wealth of information all relevant to today’s struggles for that better world for all.

Insurrection.

Issue No.4.

For those who may not know of it, "Insurrection" was a first class magazine produced by Elephant Editions. A gem of information, ideas, reports, theory, tactics and strategies. Sadly, Spirit of Revolt only has two of these magazines in its collections, No.4 and No.5, both in our Dek Keenan Collection. The good news is you can now read both of these issues on  Spirit of Revolt website Just click on HERE and then scroll down to Dek Keenan Collection -1-60, there you will also find a link to other issues which you can read courtesy of Elephant Editions Archive. sadly we don't have these other issues in our collection. Any body having any other issues of Insurrection and would like to give them a good home please get in touch HERE.

Issue No.5

‘Insurrection’ is an anarchist magazine of the 1980’s which was edited by Jean Weir of Elephant Editions, UK. Amongst agitational news reports of rebellion and repression, the publication carried some of the first English language translations of the work of Italian anarchist insurrectionist, Alfredo M. Bonanno, and remains an example of a high-quality revolutionary anarchist publication which has a confrontational analysis coupled with lasting insight.
‘Insurrection’ is the first publication to carry the key basic perspectives of anarchist insurrectional theory and methodology emerging at that time. Texts such as ‘Affinity Group’, ‘Why Insurrection’, ‘Beyond Workerism, Beyond Syndicalism’, ‘Informal Organisation’, ‘Beyond the Structure of Synthesis’, ‘Towards A New Projectuality’ and ‘Autonomous Base Nucleus’, all back to back with action reports informing and illuminating these theoretical ideas which have developed and spread around the world, becoming ‘dangerous’ tools in the hands of uncontrollables everywhere.

Towards Anarchism.

With the pandemic tapering off and austerity and unemployment facing the ordinary people, people will no doubt be looking for solutions to this onslaught of poverty. So we at Spirit of Revolt, thought that this month’s “Read of the Month” should perhaps point to one solution that is a possibility of solving our problems. It is another pamphlet from Errico Malatesta, "Towards Anarchism", from our John Cooper Collection, T/SOR-3-52-97.
Have a read and perhaps delve into the multitude of pamphlets, booklets posters and other anarchist/libertarian socialist material we have on line, look, learn and act.

Malatesta.

Covid19 has still got Spirit of Revolt members locked out of their room at the Mitchell Library, but there is still a few things we can do to keep you coming back for another wee look and to encourage you to delve into your own history. So this month Spirit of Revolt has picked a small pamphlet entitled Selected Writings by Errico Malatesta, for their “Read of the Month. Errico Malatesta was an Italian anarchist and revolutionary socialist. Though Italian, he spent much of his life exiled from Italy and over his life time he spent more than ten years in various prisons. As well as being active in the struggle for anarchism, he also wrote and edited a number of radical newspapers and was a friend of Mikhail Bakunin. Born 14 December 1853, he died 22 July 1932.

Our Kate.

As usual the people at Kate Sharpley Library do a magnificent job in preserving and making available anarchist info and history, we at Spirit of Revolt, Archives of Dissent, take our hats off to them, as I'm sure lots of others will do likewise.  This latest bulletin is no exception, packed full of interesting info. Take a wee look.

2020

Quite a lot has gone up on the website (and gone on in the world) since our last KSL Bulletin in September. We are not even thinking of trying to sum up our year. But we send you our good wishes and some anarchist history you might have missed.

Stuart Christie 1946-2020

Four months on, we’re still coming to terms with the fact it’s no good thinking ‘I must ask Stuart…’ John Barker, his friend and fellow defendant in the Stoke Newington Eight trial, has written a tribute: ‘I couldn’t stomach Bakunin and he Marx but when it came to the politics of the prison we acted as one. And something else, the great thing about Stuart as comrade and friend is that he was always cheerful and ready to make things both happen, and to work. […] With Stuart there was never any need to say, Don’t Let The Bastards Grind You Down.’
Read the rest of the tribute at https://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/vhhpd8

Bob D’Attilio tribute from the KSL

For many years Robert (Bob) D’Atillio was an inexhaustible source of material on the Sacco and Vanzetti case. His loss is a tremendous one to those of us interested in the nuances of anarchist history. See https://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/6wwrds
There’s a longer obituary by Luigi Botta at https://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/vmcx9h

Other Anarchist Lives

Thoughts on Francesco Ghezzi
Francesco Ghezzi was an anarchist militant from Milan who was also active in France, Switzerland, Germany and Russia (and was imprisoned in the last three countries)…
On the 5 November 1937 Ghezzi was arrested for the final time. His case file records his frank replies to the secret police ‘I declare that I was and remain an anarchist, and that no one will change my convictions.’… (from the Gulag Anarchists blog) https://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/fttgj8

Ruskin.

Covid19, covid19, covid19, every second word in the news outlets is covid19 or pandemic. This present situation has prevented us from accessing our archive, Spirit of Revolt, it also has somewhat hampered our activities. However, there are still things we can do to bringing you something different to read other than covid19 and pandemic, and our "Read of the Month" is one of them. For the month of November we bring you the pamphlet, The "Rights of Labour", according to John Ruskin arranged by Thomas Barclay. It is part of our Charlie Baird Collection. So read, learn and enjoy, and perhaps if you liked what you read, you should take a wee browse through the catalogue, and see what other delights you might find, and spread the word about the gems you can find in Spirit of Revolt..

The Rights of Labour.
