A Saturday Date For Edinburgh.

An appeal from UAF Edinburgh:

communities. We stand united.

No Way To Spend Your Nights.

It has been a lousy, cold, wet and windy winter so far, and though we are one of the richest countries in the world, we still have people sleeping rough in our towns and cities. There are two methods local authorities assess the number of rough sleepers in their area. One is by a count, the other is to estimate, most local authorities estimate, rather than count, so it is obvious that the figures can't be 100% accurate.

What we can be sure of is that there are far to many people having to face the winter on the streets of our country. The 2012 autumn figures for England, gathered by these methods was 2,309, an increase of 6% on the previous year, which was a massive increase 23% on 2010 figures. London, that city where the streets are "paved in gold", has the highest number of rough sleepers in the country, and there, like the rest of the country the figure is climbing. The figure for London Autumn 2012 was 24% of the total rough sleepers in England, 557.
Scotland is no different, according to figures from the report, Operation of The Homeless Persons legislation in Scotland, we have 1,737 people sleeping rough. The Glasgow Winter Night Shelter has been running through the winter months since 2010, It was the severe winter of 2010 that prompted some of the leading charities and voluntary organisations to set up the shelter. During that vicious winter it provided accommodation on approximately 2,000 occasion.
Edinburgh is the Scottish city with most rough sleepers, last year's figure was 363, while Dundee had 97.
In a country, that as a norm, suffers dreadful winters, with long dark nights, and weather from bitterly cold to extremely wet and cold, sleeping rough just shouldn't happen, no matter the circumstances that brought the individual to that position. Sufficient facilities should be in place and well publicised to make sure nobody faces the winter trying to find shelter. Just another aspect of a system that has bankers and accounts shaping our society.

Week Of Action Against Workfare.

ATOS continues its march of murder across the vulnerable in our society. I recently posted about the the tragic affair of Jacqueline Harris, who took her own life after being deemed fit to work by ATOS and having her disability allowance removed. Well their brutal actions are still bringing misery and death to our people. It was recently reported that Victor Cuff, aged59, who suffered from depression, took his own life, after having his benefits cut when those box ticking bureaucrats at ATOS, assessed him fit for work. How long will we sit back and allow this brutality against the sick and vulnerable people in our community?
Because that babbling brook of bullshit, the mainstream media, doesn't report the full extent of the onslaught against the ordinary people in our communities, lots people are unaware of the full horror of this “austerity” plan. We have workfare, forcing thousands to work for free, for corporate greed merchants, we have people facing the threat of eviction and /or reduced benefits, because of certain circumstances, they find they now have a “spare room” . We have ATOS declaring the sick and vulnerable, fit for work, then there are stagnant wages, while food and energy bills go through the roof. Then let's not forget those thousands, 70,000, at the last estimate, who face hunger and deprivation because of “sanctions”. When one of the growth areas is food banks, you know that society has failed its people. These are all a deliberate attack on the living standards of our people, an attempt to get the UK on course to be part of the new sweatshop Europe. The low wage, low welfare economy, is the corporate world's plan to boost their competitiveness with the Eastern sweatshop empire.
With a concerted well organised effort we can stop this juggernaut of corporatism and start to build a society we want, one that sees to the needs of all our people. After all we the people make everything on this planet, we distribute everything on this planet, but the system dictates what we make and where we distribute it, and it is all for the benefit of the leeches on our backs, our unnecessary burden of parasites. There are the resources, we have the ability, and we know there is a need, all that is missing is our will to take control and create that better world for all.

week of action

This coming week there is planned week of action against workfare, get involved, employed, unemployed, retired, disabled, homeless, it affects us all, by lowering the standard of living across the board. If we shout loud enough, others will hear and realise that they are not alone. We can change this society.

Edinburgh And Dundee Events.

From uafEdinburgh:

The recent murder of a prominent Greek rapper by a member of the fascist Golden Dawn shows why we need to keep on top of the racists here.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/25/golden-dawn-pavlos-fyssas-murder

On Saturday 5 October there are two very different events but both working for the anti-racist cause. A family friendly fun day in Edinburgh and in Dundee there will be a counter protest to the racist Scottish Defence League.

EDINBURGH
Last year’s Love Multiculturalism-Hate Racism event was great fun and dead popular, this year’s line-up is even better and will showcase entertainment and activities from around the world including music from Rise Katonga (ex-Bhundu boys), the Avuda Choir, the Belle Stars with Scottish & Klezmer music, Henna-hand painting, , children’s entertainer, world cuisine and stalls. Entry costs just £1 and all proceeds will go toward Unite Against Fascism in Edinburgh.

Avuda Choir:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Avuda/281654335268831

DUNDEE
The Scottish Defence League have been trying to build branches across the country so the demonstration against them in Dundee is important to keep them isolated and hopefully demoralised. The protest assembles at 12 noon in City Square. We will be sending cars of people through. Can you come? Email us: uafedinburgh@riseup.net

We really hope to organise some Unite Against Fascism meeting for students across Edinburgh, please get in touch if you would like to help out.  Email: uafedinburgh@riseup.net

ANTI-FASCIST FUNDRAISER
At the recent protest in London against the English Defence League the police went over the top and ended up arresting 100's of anti-fascists and they then put draconian bail conditions on them.

Scotland Against Fascism.

Edinburgh UAF Public meeting:
After the Woolwich murder...
Tuesday 2nd July,
7pm Edinburgh Central Mosque,
Potterrow EH8

The racist Scottish Defence League and the Nazi British National Party are seeking to exploit the horrific murder of Lee Rigby to whip up hatred and division, which has already seen violent attacks against the Muslim community including a series of arson attacks on mosques in England.
The racist SDL have organised demonstrations against mosques in Dundee and  Dumfries, as have the Nazi National Front in Aberdeen. All of these have been against the wishes of the local community.
UAF has worked with local communities to organise counter-demos, to oppose and unite the community against the hate mongering and racism peddled by the SDL. The racist SDL have been repeatedly outnumbered and shown clearly that they are not welcome.
The attacks in England after the horrendous Woolwich murder has been much worse. We invite you to come together to discuss how we can beat the racists as a united community.

The Commons Belong To The People.

Protect the commons wherever it is.

From our friends on the east coast.

For seven years local people have worked to keep Portobello Park free from development by the City of Edinburgh Council. In September 2012, the Court of Session confirmed that the Park is inalienable common good land and that it cannot be used as the site of the new Portobello High School.
Despite the Council having identified alternative suitable brownfield sites for the new school, they are now trying to use the Scottish Parliament to give them permission to build on the Park through a Private Bill. If successful, this Bill could set a precedent for other councils to use this route to obtain permission to circumvent common good protection, putting common good land and open spaces across Scotland at risk.
If you agree that building on green space should not be allowed when a brownfield alternative exists, and you are concerned about the implications of this Private Bill, please sign

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/protect-green-space-across-scotland/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=system&utm_campaign=Send%2Bto%2BFriend

Folk could also consider objecting to the private bill as we need as many folk across Scotland to do so.  It does cost £20 though! Representation is not cheap.  Here is a link to guidance for objectors:
http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/parliamentarybusiness/Bills/62502.aspx

There is mention of adverse impact to people's interests and it seems to mention a list of points that look as though they are financial impacts but I think that even if people don't live in Portobello or Edinburgh it is acceptable to say that because of the fear of a precedent being set for other councils to follow that could affect other common good land and open spaces across Scotland, you have an interest in the bill as it could affect your local open spaces, adversely affecting your health and wellbeing, or something along those lines. If you do decide to object, can you let me know please as we would like to keep a tally of objections as far as we can.

Unite Against Fascism, Edinburgh.

From Unite Against Fascism-Edinburgh:

Hello
Below is a statement on the recent murder in Woolwich and details of a despicable protest organised by the Scottish Defence League. Please forward and share this information.
Unite Against Fascism-Edinburgh sends its condolences to the family and friends of the soldier murdered in Woolwich. There can be no justification for such a terrible attack on an individual.
Despicably, racist and fascist organisations such as the Scottish and English Defence Leagues are trying to use this tragedy to whip up racism and direct hatred against all Muslims.
We must not give a quarter to those who would judge an entire religion, race or nationality by the actions of a few. We do not hold Norwegian Christians responsible for the actions of the fascist Anders Breivik, whose 2011 rampage left 77 dead. We do not hold all white British people collectively responsible for David Copeland, the former BNP member who planted bombs across London in 1999. Nor should anyone suggest that Britain’s Muslims are collectively responsible for the attack in Woolwich.
The Scottish Defence League (SDL) have organised a protest to try to stir up trouble and racist violence in the wake of the Woolwich killing, they do not care about the dead soldier, his family or the interests of any community.
We stand together to oppose the SDL protest outside Scottish parliament on Saturday 1 June.

An Inspirational Life.

I just received this sad news, from a wobbly friend and comrade, I'm sure he will have no objections to my sharing this with all those wobblies, friends and comrades out there, and like he said, we should use his life as an inspiration to organise for that better world.
Dave Patterson, an electrician, who worked mostly overseas in places like Azerbaijan and Angola, died last night. Dave joined the IWW before anybody else I know of in Scotland, before the Stevenson College branch of the 90s. He joined the Clydeside IWW, at its inception. He was born in Springboig, Glasgow, and as a teenager was involved in the formation of the National union of School Students in the mid 70s. He only rarely made meetings and events due to his work, and his Scottish residence was south of Aberdeen.
He was a dual carder also in OILC. In the course of a year I would usually see him a few times, after attending different football matches or at the STUC Mayday. In 2011 he got married to Lucy, a nurse in Edinburgh. This year in May, he was absent. A mutual friend came up to me before the Clydeside IWW took part in the procession, to explain he had been diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable strain of cancer. A few days ago he was moved to St.Columba's  hospice in Gogar near Edinburgh.
This is a sad and sudden demise and in Scotland we mourn the loss of Dave, an unforgettable character. But knowing Dave and his affinity with the wobbly tradition, he would say - "Don't Mourn, Organise!"

UNITE AGAINST FASCISM - EDINBURGH..

Message from Unite Against Fascism.

The Scottish Defence League (SDL) won their court case today, so for the first time these racists will be allowed to march in Scotland. It is outrageous that a Sheriff sees fit to grant racists a march. Racism is not acceptable on the football terraces so why does she think it is acceptable on our streets?
Today’s Unite Against Fascism press release on the court decision can be seen at: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2moep8WjsdkNkQxd24zRF9fZWs/edit?pli=1
However while the SDL will be kept on Regent Road, out of sight of almost everyone, we will march right through the middle of town. Unite Against Fascism urges you to come to the Grassmarket for 12 noon, we will then march up to George IV Bridge, down the High St and across The Bridges to Waterloo Place/Regent Road. We will then have a rally with a broad platform of speakers outside St Andrews House. Our march and rally will be well stewarded and safe.
It is really important that everyone comes to this march. We need to set down a marker that allowing racists to march is not acceptable. Please bring your relatives, friends and colleagues.
We need to demonstrate that they are a minority and that the overwhelming majority say no to racists and Nae Nazis in Edinburgh.

CLOSURE OF REMPLOY FACTORIES.

A late appeal from the STUC.

Thur 22 March - Protest against the closure of Remploy factories.

From 9.00am, Apex International Hotel, 31-35 Grassmarket, Edinburgh.

Letter from STUC:

The STUC has received correspondence from the GMB regarding Liz Sayce’s attendance at the Scottish Union for Supported Employment Conference this coming Thursday, the 22 March. They are requesting support from the trade union movement to mount a demonstration outside the Conference at the Apex International Hotel, 31-35 Grassmarket, Edinburgh from 9.00am onwards. Liz Sayce who is Chief Executive of Radar was the author an independent review into supported employment as a result of which the coalition Government made the recent unacceptable announcement to close Remploy factories placing the livelihoods of hundreds of disabled workers at risk.
This is perhaps one of the most callous acts by the current Government and the STUC and its Disabled Workers’ Committee would urge affiliates to join the demonstration if possible.
The STUC has supported all the trade unions in Remploy throughout their campaign to protect the jobs of vulnerable workers, including a substantial and visible presence at the front of the March at the People First March and Rally on October 1st. .
We realise this is late notice but any assistance that your organisation could provide in publicising this demonstration would be gratefully received.

Yours sincerely

Ian Tasker
Assistant Secretary STUC

UNITE AGAINST FASCISM - -SUCCESS.

Unite Against Fascism is proud that the protest on Saturday kept the racists
and Nazis our of the city centre of Edinburgh. As over 400 people,
overwhelmingly from Edinburgh, joined the protest, we demonstrated that the
streets of Edinburgh belong to anti-racists.

The hand written placard stating “We love haggis pakora” best summed up the
spirit that made the march so positive. The diverse groups represented on our
march, from LGBT groups to Muslims, black and white was a living example of our
city maintaining it’s proud tradition of welcoming all communities.

As our march held the city centre the racists in the Scottish Defence League
and their violent friends were humiliated as they were hidden on a quiet
street, invisible to the people of Edinburgh. Instead of the mobilization of
500 they had boasted about bringing, less than a hundred made it to their
assembly area.

And their day got even worse……
Some members of the SDL went down to a bar in Leith to drink after the march.
However someone called the police and the SDL were then held inside before
being bussed out.

THE TEAPOT COLLECTIVE INTRODUCTION TO ANARCHY, CONCLUSION.

This is the back and final page of The Teapot Collective Introduction to Anarchy. You can read page 14 HERE.

The Anarchist teapot.

The Anarchist Teapot has to date (December98) moved through eight buildings in Brighton and two in Worthing, born out of the idea “to have free minds, we must have free tea”. The squatting of disused buildings created autonomous spaces, where we could give tea and food freely without giving ourselves wages or making profits, and encourage communication and organisation. We've also taken the “kitchen” to actions and events around the country, and bookstalls to car boot sales and gigs.
These are, as we feel, a few of the small things we can do to create anarchy.

Suggested for further reading  (there's lots of interesting stuff in our reading room too!)
Spectacular Times, series of cheap booklets A Distribution, 84b Whitechapel High street, London E1.
Anarchy a graphic Guide, by Clifford Harper, 9the pics and some of the text in this leaflet are stolen from this), Camden Press £4:95.
The Revolution of Everyday Life, by Raoul Vanigen, Rebel Press, £7:95.

Check out the Public House Bookshop, 31 Little Preston Street in Brighton, to the extensive catalogue from AK Distribution, PO Box 12766, Edinburgh EH8 9YE

Or see our bookstall, somewhere near you (maybe)!

“We are not in the least afraid of ruins. We are going to inherit the Earth. There is not the slightest doubt about that. The ruling class might blast and run its own world before it leaves the stage of history. We carry a new world here in our hearts. That world is growing this minute.”
Buenaventura Durruti, Spain 1936.

I hope you have found the Teapot Collective's little booklet both enjoyable and informative, though a lot of the above information may be out of date as it has just been copied straight from the wee booklet printed in 1998.
