Film Club.

Good news for Glaswegin anarchists, and like minded peoples from further afield. Clydeside Anarchist Noise is starting a film club to be held in Glasgow Autonomous Space, first Sunday of every month at 6pm. This is really something we should all jump onboard and support.

Details.
Hello,

We have decided to start an Anarchist Film Club that will run the first Sunday of every month beginning this Sunday (06/11)! It will take place at Glasgow Autonomous Space at 6pm. The plan is to watch Birdman of Pollock (Curaidh na Coille).
The idea behind the film Club is that it will attempt to create a completely autonomous film club where everyone is welcome to contribute/enjoy. You can call this an attempt to birth new free spaces and anarchist communities in Glasgow, as well as play our part in making each others lives a tiny bit more manageable and more importantly fun.
We would love to see you all there!! (or even share the poster if you want:))

Cheers,
Clydeside Anarchist Noise

Spirit of Revolt At The Bookfair.

The Spirit of Revolt Archive is now established as a very valuable resource of grassroots working class history and struggles in the Glasgow/Clydeside area. To this end we hold exhibitions, and talks/discussions, we also hold a regular talk/discussion and display of material in the Mitchell Library, called "Show and Tell", as well as other events to attempt to bring our history alive.
We are delighted to be taking part in coming event Glasgow Autonomous Space Bookfair on Saturday, March 2nd. with a stall displaying a wiff of what we hold in the archive. Please come along and visit us at the stall, ask questions, Talk to us about your views on Glasgow's proud radical history.

Shy Radicals by Hamja Ahsan
Part manifesto, part history of the shy revolution, part hymn to introversion: Shy Radicals is a beautiful exploration of exploitation, nationalism and power-dynamics as seen from the perspective of the revolutionary introvert. It's a poem and a manual that helps you take apart the cult of personality and endless expression and their part in enforcing evils of capitalism, colonialism and white supremacy. Exploring the Shy People's Republic of Aspergistan, the book looks at how neurotypical-domination has led both to the oppression of shy people, and to the creation of an unnecessarily brutal world: reminding us that 'the extrovert state is a terrorist state.' Ahsan's work is genuinely radical, and this book challenges traditional conceptions of art and politics by putting militant quietness at its centre. It's as deadly serious as it is fun. Buy two copies and give one to a shy comrade or extroverted enemy.
The flag of Aspergistan consists of a black flag punctuated thusly '...'

Glasgow's Autonomous Bookfair.

A coming event in Glasgow, well worth marking your diary for, The Glasgow Bookfair. Glasgow used to have a pop-up bookfair called RIB, Radical Independent Bookfair, and it was a familiar sight at various events around the city. It stopped a few years ago and since then Glasgow has been denuded of a bookfair. It is a sad city that can't hold its own radical bookfair, so here is a chance to support one and hopefully see it grow, and put itself, with your help on the Radical Bookfair map.

Glasgow Autonomous Space, Unit 11, 53 Kilbirnie Street, G5, will be hosting a Book Fair on Saturday 2nd March 2019.

The idea is for the book fair is to reflect the ethos of GAS, fighting capitalism and other forms of oppression, and the diversity of the people and organisations who use GAS and who will use GAS in the future.
There will be books on anarchism and feminism with radical zine distros and small publishers.
Info stalls on organising Deliveroo and Uber Eats workers, asylum seeker, migrant and refugee solidarity, the radical history of Glasgow, and veganism.
Discussions and talks by Go Vegan Scotland, Shy Radicals, Sisters UnCut and Ubuntu Women Shelter with more to be confirmed.
Workshops include badge making, under 12's cycling, printing, radical songs and trans poetry.
Plus free food, children's activities, Rattle Library and Stories For Strangers.
The Book Fair is part of GAS's 3rd Birthday Celebrations with a party in the evening.
Spread the word, share, plan to be there.

Against the National Project:
Memory and Mobility in Contemporary Colombian Cinema

Archivist and curator Juana Suárez (NYU Tisch School of the Arts) presents a programme of four recent short films by Colombian filmmakers living abroad. Works by Juan Soto, Laura Huertas Millán, Camilo Restrepo and Gonzalo Escobar unsettle established narratives of national cinema though counter-hegemonic perspectives. Experimental uses of archives, intersections with video art, and explorations of texture and place characterise this radical and developing body of work.
Introduction by Juana Suárez
Q&A with filmmaker Juan Soto

Suggested donation £5, concessions £2, but please come anyway if you can't afford to donate, it's all good.

3. Solidarity with IWW member standing trial - Free the Pride 5
Thursday 8/3/18
09.00-12.30
Glasgow Sheriff Court
Panos Theodoropoulos of the IWW was arrested while attempting to prevent the harassment and unjust arrest of a 16 year old during the Glasgow Pride march. The 16 year old had been targeted for holding a sign with the slogan ‘This Faggot Fights Fascists’. The police used extensive physical force on Panos, tackled him to the ground, and subsequently held him in custody for over 30 hours. Thankfully, the police dropped all charges on the 16-year-old, though they still see the need to drag Panos through the courts, for attempting to prevent what they basically admitted was a wrongful arrest!
The arrested comrades were participating in the ‘Red and Black Bloc’, organised by queer members of the IWW as an anti-capitalist, anti-fascist presence in an increasingly commercialised and depoliticized Pride.
In the same Pride march the police arrested 3 trans activists protesting Pride’s decision to have police lead. These arrestees have not been issued court dates as the police continue to ‘search for evidence’. We know from experience that the police don’t like attempts to undermine them or their attempts at ‘community outreach’. We are committed to ongoing solidarity with these arrestees, along with all those in the trans community who face harassment from the police.
At the same time, the fact that Panos’s court date is set for International Women’s Day gives us the opportunity to highlight how seemingly different struggles are intimately connected. Patriarchy, racism and heteronormativity are crucial elements of the system of repression we are living in. As imprisonment and social control increasingly penetrate our precarious lives, we extend our solidarity to the increasing number of women prisoners in the UK and to the members of the trans community who are not only imprisoned but also suffer from being misgendered by the authorities and disproportionately experience violence and harassment. We therefore encourage everyone to participate in the various events organised around Glasgow for IWD (provided below).
When activists are targeted simply for protesting, court solidarity becomes a crucial part of the fight to defend our fundamental rights to protest. Let it be shown that the movement refuses to accept the criminalisation of protesters, whether now or in the future. Let us lay the foundations, in our budding movements, for lasting, practical political solidarity.

As the IWW slogan goes, ‘an injury to one is an injury to us all’.
DROP ALL CHARGES!

JOIN US AT THE SOLIDARITY DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE GLASGOW SHERIFF COURT ON THE 8TH OF MARCH AT 09.00!

Glasgow Events.

Some interesting events coming up in the next few days, a chance to show solidarity, learn about anti-fascists, and have a right good sing-song, if you are in or around the Glasgow area:

Fuck Off Tory Cunts Court Case
Thursday, 11/1/18
Glasgow Sheriff Court
10am

David McHarg is on trial for displaying a 'Fuck off you Tory cunts' poster on his window. Class War Scotland has called for a solidarity demonstration outside Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Anarchist Federation Film Showing: The Anti-Fascists
Thursday, 11/1/18
Glasgow Autonomous Space, 53 Kilbirnie Street
6-9pm

In 2014, left-wing activists and a group of neo-nazis clashed in the immigrant quarter of the Swedish town of Malmö, leaving several wounded and one anti-fascist - Showan Shattack - nearly dead. That same year, a violent gang of Fascists attacked an anti-Racist demonstration in Stockholm. A fight broke out between them and the few members of Anti-Fascist Action, which left one Fascist wounded, and one anti-fascist in jail. In this context, a documentary crew set out examining the history and activities of the Swedish anti-fascist movement, and its connections to the same one in Greece. Its successes and failures have lessons for all of us.
Join us for tea and biscuits at GAS (we'll heat the upstairs room up ahead of time :-)) and we'll watch the film and chat about it informally afterwards. Free, all welcome, donations accepted.

Red And Black Song Club.

There's a new voice in town, at the moment I believe it is just a whisper, but has the potential to become a roar. When I say  a "new voice", well really it's an old voice, it's a voice of struggle, a voice of people's desire for freedom and equality, a desire for justice. It is in fact the Red and Black Song Club, they will be trying to fill your hearts with tales of past struggles, with hope, with solidarity and camaraderie. So pop along and have a listen, or better still, lend your voice, join in.
You'll find them every, 1st. and 3rd. Thursday of the month, at 7pm. in the Glasgow Autonomous Space, Kilbirnie Street, (near West Street subway).
The Red and Black Song Club is exactly what it sounds like- a song club for the radical left. We meet up on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month to sing, celebrate and keep alive radical left-wing music from the past and present.
You don't need any musical experience- just a love of radical songs of working class struggle, anti-fascism and solidarity.
Other musical instruments are more than welcome too!

A Letter From The Past.

New addition to Spirit of Revolt Archive, thanks to auther/writer/political activist, James Kelman, a letter from the past from one of Glasgow's better known anarchists, Bobby Lynn.

Robert (Bobby) Lynn, 1924-1996, was a well know Glasgow anarchist and a character. This month our “Read of the Month” is a letter that has just come into the Spirit of Revolt Archive. It is from Bobby to James Kelman, attempting to raise money to start a social centre in Glasgow. Since then, Glasgow has had several attempts at an autonomous/social centre, but most have been very short lived. The latest one is the Glasgow Autonomous Space, (GAS), let’s wish it luck and hope it has a much longer life than previous attempts.
